Ennis boys deliver a golden display

There was a fine turnout of Clare athletes at the Munster juvenile U-9 to U-19 relays, plus the girls’ and boys’ U-12 to U-19 multi-events, which were held in Nenagh Indoor Arena.

The big winners were Ennis Track in the boys’ U-14 4x200m when they took the gold medals. The team members were Tony Odubuto, Jamie Roche, Moses Iwalewa and the anchor man Cathal O’Brien, who came from behind off the final bend to snatch victory from Limerick AC.
In the multi-events there was gold for Derbhile Ryan, Clare and Nenagh in the girls’ U-16 and bronze for Rachel Clancy, St John’s. Emer Hillery, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare won gold in the girls’ U-18 pentathlon, while there was silver for Cliodhna Blake, St John’s in the U-15 event and for Paraic McNamara, Marian in the boys’ U-16.
In the Munster juvenile relays over 100 teams took part and there was a big win for the Marian girls’ U-9 4x100m team of Aishling Healy, Kate McDonnell, Grace Carmody and Ciara Meehan.
The Ennis Track Club boys’ U-13 team were just beaten on the line in the 4x100m and had to settle for the silver medal, with James McGuire, Sean Dolan, Tony Odubuto and Farouk Sobayo making up the team.
In the juvenile multi-events, 12 Clare athletes took part and Thomas Clancy, St John’s in the boys’ U-13s produced a fine performance when finishing fourth with 2,738 points.
In the boys’ U-14 event, Patrick O’Rourke, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare was seventh on 2,854 points, with Cathal O’Brien, Ennis Track ninth on 2,768 points.
In the U-14 girls’ pentathlon, two St John’s athletes, Caoimhe Harvey (2,837 points) and Tara Bradley (2,810 points) were fourth and fifth respectively.
In the girls’ U-15 event, Cliodhna Blake captured a silver medal on 3,110 points with a fine run in the 60m hurdles, a leap of 4.40m in the long jump, a throw of 6.05m in the shot putt, a leap of 1.32m in the high jump and a time of 2.45:12 in the 800m.
U-16 athlete, Paraic McNamara, Marian also competed in five events. He was second in the hurdles, won the long jump with a leap of 5.02m, had a high jump of 1.55m, a shot putt throw of 9.371, while he was second in the 800m for a total of 3,819 points.
In the girls’ U-16 event, two Clare athletes were battling for Munster medals, the Munster champion Derbhile Ryan from Clonlara, who runs with Nenagh, and Rachel Clancy, St John’s. Derbhile retained the Munster title with 3,799 points, while there was a bronze medal for Rachel on 3258 points.
In the girls’ U-18 multi-events, Emer Hillery finished first in the 60m hurdles, had a long jump of 4.19m, a high jump of 1.40m, a shot putt throw of 7.49m and victory in the 800m in 2.48:55 to win the gold medal with 2,973 points.
