Ennis Boxing Club, shaping up for its 50th year of activity having been formed in 1961, will kick-off the year with a match against the boxers from Olympic in Galway this Saturday at 1pm in Ennis.
Boxers from both sides will struggle to make their respective stipulated weight categories after the Christmas indulgence but all will be anxious to start the year with a victory in order to lay down a marker for the upcoming championships in March.
Local favourites Lee Sherlock and Lee Brady, as well as the McDonagh twins, John and Simon, who performed well in the pre-Christmas leagues, will be in action on Saturday. Keelan Sexton, who has now joined the Ennis club, is in good shape but may have to sit this one out because he is due to box in the home internationals in the coming fortnight.
Olympic will have their national champions in action with brothers Ben and James Cleary, Chris Sherlock and Dylan Ward all straining at the leash.
Topping the bill will be the contest between Martin McDonagh from the Olympic squad and Ennis welterweight Wayne Danagher, who has made good progress through the last three months since his move from the West Clare Club. Danagher hails from Lisdoonvarna and travels to Ennis three nights a week for training.
The Ennis club is just recovering from devastating water damage as a result of a burst pipe that saturated their ring and punchbags and were it not for the stern work by Tommy Lyons and his helpers in the club, Saturday’s tournament would have had to be abandoned.
