Ennis boxers to host northern selection

ENNIS Boxing Club will host a team of boxers from the Newry and Mourne District of County Down on Saturday in the Community Centre as part of the visit of sportsmen and sportswomen from that area. The event is supported by the Ennis Town Council.

Although boxing is virtually off-season right now, it is anticipated that the tournament will provide plenty of sparkling contests, with the visitors bringing many of their Ulster and Irish champions.

Local boxing officials and mentors will be in Dublin for the National Junior and Ladies Championships, which are ongoing in the National Stadium but they will undoubtedly be returning for the 6pm start of the Ennis show.

Both Antoinette Keane from Ennis and Kayleigh McCormack from Kilfenora have booked their places in the finals on Saturday, with Antoinette facing old adversary Niamh Ball from the Trojan Club in Kerry and Kayleigh taking on last year’s champion, Louise Donoghue from Geesala.

It is hoped that a reciprocal visit from Clare sports people will be on the cards early next year and that the Northerners, who will stay at the Clare Inn Hotel for the weekend, will savour the delights and hospitality of the Clare people for the duration of their visit.
