The East Clare-based Centre for Environmental Living and Training (CELT) will be participating in a wide variety of events over the coming months, culminating in an appearance at the Electric Picnic in Stradbally next month.
Their programme of events begins with a Heritage Day at Scariff Community Garden this Saturday, where CELT will hold a variety of free workshops and demonstrations from 12 noon to 4pm.
Among the items to be covered will be crochet, knitting, spinning, natural dyeing and felting techniques. Those in attendance are invited to bring along their own projects and join in. There will also be a herblore walk and talk with Kes Clarke.
Also as part of Heritage Week, CELT will be at The Log Cabin, Ballyduff Upper, County Waterford, on Sunday for further workshops and demonstrations in wet felting, leatherwork, bread-baking, basket weaving and sugan chair making.
They will also be continue to run courses in plant magic, managing a small-holding with emphasis on biodiversity at Eve’s Orchard, Caher Rice, Feakle this Saturday and Sunday. This will be followed by intermediate level silversmithing with Susi Lewisohn on August 26 – 27.
Meanwhile, CELT will make an appearance at the Newmarket-on-Fergus Carnival on Sunday, August 28.
The group will then take to the music festival circuit in September, where they will hold skills demonstrations at Electric Picnic from Friday September 2 to Sunday, September 4
A further course in natural building at intermediate level will be held with Saul Mosbacher in Feakle for two weekends on September 17 and 18 and October 8 and 9.
This will include dry-stone construction, cob and cordwood, wattle and daub and basic timber-frame.
Craft and design metalwork courses will be held in early September for those at intermediate level, where Mark Wilson will offer blacksmithing techniques at The Old Forge, Mountshannon.
Further events in September include a course on Woodland Life under the Microscope, which will be held on Friday September 23 from 10am to 4pm at Tuamgraney Community Wildlife Park.
At this event, an introduction to the amazing microscopic wildlife of the woods will be given by Dr Fran Giaquinto (Clare Biodiversity group).
Thereafter, CELT will hold its annual autumn Weekend in the Woods on October 1and 2 at Bealkelly Oak Woods, Tuamgraney, where there will be up to 15 introductory courses on offer and a two-day workshop in traditional crafts/sustainable and ecological skills.
