Dromoland Castle qualified for the next stage of the Irish Mixed foursomes when they won the North Munster section on their home course at the weekend. On Saturday, they had a 3-1 win over Ennis while Shannon beat Kilrush and East Clare, Kilkee beat Spanish Point and Woodstock beat both Lahinch and Doonbeg Links.
On Sunday Shannon overcame Kilkee while Dromoland were winners over Woodstock. They then went on to beat Shannon in the final on Sunday afternoon.
In the weekend’s men’s singles competition, Jason O’Leary was the winner with 38 points from Brian Arthur on 37.
This weekend, the captain’s (William Fitzgerald) prize will be played for and a timesheet is in operation.
Arrangements are well advanced for the Dromoland Castle Pro-Am on July 5 and further details are available from the office.
Lahinch
Sinéad Sexton won the Connacht Ladies’ Senior Championship at Oughterard Golf Club last week by defeating Carla Reynolds (Seapoint GC) in the final by 4/3. Sinéad was the leading qualifier after the stroke play qualifying competition and won all four matches on her way to winning the title.
In the Irish women’s close championship at County Louth this week, Sinéad was beaten 3 and 2 in round two by Jean O’Driscoll from Muskerry.
The club’s Barton Shield team was defeated by Shannon in the North Munster area finals held at East Clare last weekend. After wins over Dromoland Castle and Castletroy, the final proved a step too far for the team, managed by Denis Creedon.
Due to a clash of dates, the junior boys Lissadell and Klondyke Cups are being brought forward one week and will now commence on Tuesday, July 17.
The weekly senior men’s competition takes place every Wednesday throughout the summer months on the Castle Course. The first draw takes place at 10am, with a second draw at 10.30am.
Kevin Glynn has been appointed team manager of the Munster Boys, who will participate in the inter-provincial championships at Royal County Down later in the year.
In a ladies’ invitational team-of-four competition on Monday last, the winners were Catherine McKenna (17) Lahinch, Catherine McEneaney (28) Tralee, Catherine Twomey (24) Tralee and Angela Clifford (21) Fota, with 89 points. In second place were Val Shannon (8), Barbara McEvoy (15), Linda Doyle (15), all Lahinch, and Karen White (23) Spanish Point, with 87 points. They were followed by Patricia O’Donnell (26), Mary O’Halloran (28), Anna Glynn (17) and Vera Madden (20), all Lahinch, with 84 points. Pamela Morgan (8), Elaine Hickey (7), Niamh Whelan (11), Muiriosa Connolly (10), all Lahinch, with 84 points, Nollie McCarthy (20) Lahinch, Mary Lou Carroll (17) Templeogue, Eileen Flemming (20) Charleville and Evelyn Skehan (21) Lahinch, also 84 points.
In the men’s open singles on Thursday, Mick C McNamara (16) was the winner with 35 points from Patrick J McElhinney (5) with 32 points and Kevin Glynn (9) with 31 points.
The monthly medal, a men’s singles stroke competition, was played on Saturday when the winner was Pádraig Hayes (9) with 70 nett from Patrick Glynn (6) with 71 and Murt McMahon (9) with 73. Kevin Power won the gross with 77.
Olivia Lucas (8) was the winner of the ladies’ singles v par on Saturday, with a score of one up.
Shannon
Captain Aidan Mannix’ prize was played for at Shannon at the weekend when the winner was former Wolfe Tones hurler and manager Pat O’Rourke.
The 18 handicapper returned a score of 64 to win by a shot from Adrian Tracey (18) with Jim McNamara (99) third on 65 followed by Michael Wall (16) with 66, William Ryan (14) with 66, Chris Maguire (7) with 66, Jim O’Brien (24) with 68, Neil Ryan (11) with 68, Michael Allen (7) with 69, Brendan Hughes (7) with 69, Tom Kiely (13) with 69) and Vincent Scully (10) with 69.
Ed Hickey (1) won the gross with 72 from Paul O’Neill (1) on 73. Pascal Regan (12) won the past captain’s prize with 70 while the guests’ section was won by Padraic McNicholas (10) with 36 points.
The intermediate scratch cup was played for at Shannon on Sunday when the winner was Jason Casey (14) with 78 from Gerry Dunne (13) with 82, Seamus Twomey (13) with 83 and Hugh Heaney (13) with 83. All are Shannon club members.
In the nett section, Michael McInerney (13) won from John O’Connell (17), James Coonerty (12) and Christy Sherlock (16). All returned 71.
Kilrush
Barry Murphy (9), Kilkee was the winner of the open singles at Kilrush last Monday with 38 points. He had one to spare from Jim McKenna (4) from Ballybunion.
In a similar competition on Tuesday, Frank Reidy (2) from Kilcock won with 40 points from Michael Leonard (18) with 38 points.
Wednesday’s singles was won by J O’Donnell (9) with 44 points from Michael Hemmings (17) with 41 and Declan O’Donovan (9) with 40.
In the Kay Glynn scotch mixed Stableford competition, Lucy Blake and Tony McMahon won with 44 points from Peggy Mulqueen and Brian Scanlan, who had a similar score. Geraldine Burke and John McNeilis were third with 41 points.
The winners of Saturday’s team-of-three competition were John Stapleton, Pat Shannon and Declan O’Donovan with 87 points and they had one to spare over Martin Daly, Finbarr and Tony McMahon.
The winner of Sunday’s open singles was Michael Hemmings with 43 points from John O’Mahony on a similar score with Neil Brown in third spot on 42 points.
The lady vice-captain’s prize (Margaret Donnelly) will be played for this Thursday while the men’s vice-captain’s prize (Michael Hogan) will be played for on Saturday. Timesheets are in operation (065 9051138, ext 1).
This Friday, the vice-captain’s mixed competition will take place. This will include the official opening of the club’s signature hole (ninth). A lot of work has taken place in the past few months to upgrade and improve the ninth hole. Draw for partners will be at 6.15pm.
The North Munster area competition of the Junior Cup will take place at Kilrush on the weekend of Saturday, June 30 and Sunday July 1. The committee has asked for any help in preparing the course for this event.
Woodstock
In the club singles at Woodstock at the weekend, the winner was Thomas Barrett with 40 points from Jason Considine with a similar score.
In a change to the fixture list, the captain’s fourball will be played on the weekend of Saturday, June 30 and Sunday, July 1.
The captain’s (James Carmody) weekend away will take place on September 21 and 22 to Westport, with golf at Ballinrobe and Westport.
The club mixed foursomes takes place this Thursday, with the monthly medal the competition on Saturday and Sunday.
Spanish Point
Last weekend, the club’s mixed foursomes team were in action against Kilkee in the first round of the Clare section of the independent mixed annual championship and yet again, with the teams tied at two games each, the result was decided at the 17th hole in the final match, with Kilkee getting through to the next round on a score of three games to two.
Earlier in the week, the over-60s played in the Jimmy Carroll Memorial, north Munster section, which was hosted by Ennis for the first time. With three cards to count out of the four pairs, Spanish Point narrowly missed qualification by four points. After a busy two months of inter-club competition, it now falls to the Munster Country Clubs team to keep the flag flying and they go into their quarter-final match against Lismore Golf Club on Saturday, June 30 at Doneraile. Team managers Martin Glenny and Noel Connellan have a strong panel and they will travel for a practise in the next few days and would appreciate support from as many members as possible at the game.
On Tuesday, the senior open was won by Gerry Meade (16) with 30 points.
The 18 hole singles on the weekend had a large number of players entering, with good scoring in windy conditions and was won by Eoghan O’Loughlin (4) with 38 points from Noel McMahon (captain) (19) on 38 points, Gerry Gallagher (21) on 35 points and David Keane (12) on 34 points. This weekend is the third singles in the 2012 golfer-of-the-year series and timesheets are in the clubhouse.
The Nozomi Open day competition was won by Angela Dowling (33) on a score of 39 points followed by Aoife O’Malley (11) with 36 points. Pat Butler (30), Bernie O’Gorman (23) and Jenny Cagney (15) had 33 points each.
The lady captain’s (Nuala Kilroy) day will take place on June 30. The timesheet is available in the clubhouse.
Ennis
Ennis hosted the junior and intermediate scratch cups at the weekend. In the gross, Alan Butler was the winner with 69 from Keelan O’Flaherty on 72 and Pat Murphy on 73. In the nett category, Sean Myatt was the winner with 65.
In the intermediate competition, Richard Keane was the winner with 82 from Frank Holly with 83 and Conor Flaherty on 84. Philip Brigdale won the nett with 66.
In the Friday open singles, William G Delaney was the winner with 40 points from Tony Kinnevane on 37 points and Rory Callinan on 36 points. Kevin Lane won the gross with 31 points.
In the ladies’ singles competition, Betty O’Reilly was the winner with 38 points from Joan Malone on 36 points and Bríd Cunningham on 34 points.
In the ladies’ seniors competition, the winners were Kathleen Frehill, Mary Colten and Helen Brooks.
Ennis seniors held their annual Memorial Day last Thursday. The winner was Mike Torpey with 38 points from Peter Day, 37, Paddy Cahill, 37, John Keane, 35, Johnny Cullinan, 34, Tom Greene, 32, Tom Purcell, 32 and Greg Fogarty, 32. Category 1 was won by John McEntee on 32, Category 2 by Tony Kehoe on 32 and Category 3 by Paul Mocker, 32.
Portumna
Enda Quigley (18) won the president’s prize with 82 points from Vincent Treacy (14) with 80 points, Padraic Cahalan (22) , Pat Quinlan (8), Graham Carty (14) and Ivan Cormican (10) all with 78 points. Dan Hogan (11) was the leading qualifier with 41 points. The seniors was won by Willie Carty (8) with 70 points. JP McLoughlin (Scr) won the gross with 68 points from Ger Lynch (6) with 65 points.
The past president’s prizewinner was Frank Kilkenny (10) with 75 points.
In the ladies’ section, the winner was Mary Conwell (26) with 71 points from Suzanne Corcoran (3) 70 points, Mary McDonagh (21), 69 points and Mary McElroy (24), also with 69 points. Ann Cassidy (3) won the gross with 60 points. The leading qualifier was Mabel Conroy (25) with 38 points, while the seniors’ winner was Carmel McLoughlin (10) with 60 points.
The president’s prize was played for over two weekends, with the leading 39 gents and 15 ladies qualifying for the play-off. Mike set a precedent by presenting his prizes on the 18th green.
The Miele team, managed by Bridget Broderick and Judith Barry won their second-round game in the competition.
Open week commences this weekend with an open fourball men’s and ladies’ singles, a three ball and a team-of-four competition will be held during the week.
Gort
In the men’s competition at Gort at the weekend, the winner was Philip Dunne (23) with 44 points from Joe Beakey (9) with 41 points and Brian Murtagh (9) with 40 points. Enda Cradock (scr) won the gross with 38 points.
In an open singles on Saturday, Eoin McEvoy (17) was the winner with 39 points from John Kenna (26) on a similar score and Paul Mee (20), also with 39 points. James Finnegan (9) won the gross with 26 points.
Friday’s team-of-four scramble was won by Noel and Maria O’Shaughnessy, Margaret and Fiona Kelleher from Mary Fahey Coen, John and David Daly and Martin Flaherty. In third spot were John Rodgers, Peter Deegan, Shane Murphy and Dara Smith.
The open singles on Thursday was won by Rory O’Donnell (19) with 36 points from Ryan Boyle (5) with a similar score and Brian Murtagh (9) with 35 points. Enda Cradock (scr) won the gross with 33 points.
The Wednesday singles was won by Tony Curran (12) with 66 from Philip McInerney (17) with 66 and Adrian Conway (7) with 67. Enda Cradock (scr) won the gross with 70.
In a singles competition on Tuesday, Gerard Smith (17) was the winner with 41 points from Jerry Leahy (10) with 40 points and Brendan Hanniffy (12) with 40 points. Enda Cradock (scr) won the gross with 36 points.
The lady captain’s (Regina Malone) prize to the men will be played for this Saturday and Sunday.
Last week’s ladies’ singles was won Bernie Diskin (13) with 41 points from Marie Hannon Healy (14) with 38 points and Sara Broderick (22) with 36 points. Siobhán Forde (13) won the gross with 24 points.
In an open singles on Wednesday, Bernie Diskin (13) won with 35 points from Hannah McInerney (8) with a similar score and Nelly Shaughnessy (28) with 34 points. Mary Fahey Coen (16) won the gross with 18 points.
Hannah McInerney (10) was the winner of a similar competition on Tuesday with 45 points from Josie Cummins (2) with 42 points and Gabrielle Warnock (22) with 37 points. Bernie Diskin (13) won the gross with 23 points.
Frank Higgins’ men’s captain’s prize to the ladies will be played for on Sunday.
East Clare
In the men’s stroke competition at East Clare at the weekend, the winner was Martin Breen (14) with 67 nett from Eoin McGuinness (2) 68 nett and Barry Hurley (11) 68 nett.
The winner of the seniors’ masters was Kevin Grimes (24) with 40 points. In the men’s seniors competition, the winners were Pat Browne, Liam Nolan and Michael Drew from John Farrell, Kevin Grimes and Kieran Gibbons, with third place filled by Bill Cullen, Liam Skelly and Jack Hogan.
In the ladies’ seniors competition, the winners were Marie Moloney and Hilda McHugh from Phil Burke and Breda Reid.
Friday’s scramble was won by Denis Collins, Hilda McHugh and Dermot O’Donoghue from Catherine Minogue, Mary Collins, Jason Horan and Michael O’Donoghue.
In the ladies’ singles competition, Nancy Starr was the winner from Catherine Minogue, with Patricia Kerr in third spot.
The Relations Cup was played for on Monday and resulted in victory for William and Michael O’Brien with 48 points. They won by one from Val and Oisín Donnellan. Brigid Minogue and Bridie Hanrahan returned the best ladies’ score with 46 points.
This weekend, Kevin Mannion’s captain’s prize will be played for and entries must be submitted before the draw this Thursday.
Kilkee
In the weekend’s singles competition at Kilkee, the winner was Gerry O’Halloran (15) with 33 points from Tony Delaney (10) on 31 points and Tim Ahern (14), also with 31 points.
Sunday’s singles was won by Martin Leyden (17) with 44 points from Liam Browne (16) with 43 points and Tim Ahern (14) with 31 points.
Clarecastle
Founder member Bernard Hanrahan Snr was the winner of the Clarecastle Society’s recent outing at Portumna. Colin Higgins was second with John McEntee third.
The nines winners were Niall McMahon and Gus Considine. Frank Conway was the winner of the nearest-to-the-pin prize. Declan Howley claimed the guests’ section prize. The next outing will be to Dromoland on Saturday, July 21. First tee is reserved from 11am.
Sixmilebridge
The Sixmilebridge Society’s president’s (Bobby Deegan) prize will be played for at Nenagh this Saturday, June 23 when the tee will be reserved from 11am.
