Dromoland league concludes


THE Winter Team League concluded at Dromoland last week and the overall winners were Paul O’Brien, Gerry McInerney, Michael Flannery, Diarmaid McMahon and Gerry Malone.

They had four points to spare over Jimmy McManus, Aidan McMahon, Dermot O’Neill, Frank O’Grady and Sean Conway.

In third spot were Eugene Fawl, Gerry Barrett, Dale Foley, Philip O’Sullivan and Paschal Duggan. The weekly singles winner for the final week was Dale Foley with 44 points. Next week’s competition will be 18-hole singles Stableford.

Joan Ryan, Cora O’Toole, Maria Nolan, Mary Keane, Dolores Fox and Laura Haugh are in the lead in the Ladies’ Winter Team League with 377 points. Carola Wixsted won this week’s senior ladies’ competition.

Ennis
AT Ennis Golf Club last week, the seniors held a team-of-four competition (two to score at each hole). The winners, with 86 points, were Peadar Cosgrove, John Normoyle, Terry Hughes and Michael Dempsey.

They had two to spare over John McEntee, Tim Kelly, Luke Coote and Maurice Walshe. In third spot were John Devitt, Joe Dilleen, Kevin Murray and Michael Finn, with fourth spot filled by Tom McGrath, Johnny Guerin, Jim Scully and Joe O’Brien. In fifth place were Tommy Purcell, Sean O’Gorman, Jimmy McNamara and Frank Landy followed by Noel Connellan, George Tuohy, Michael Nunan and Sean Ryan.

In the weekly 16-hole club competition at the weekend, the format was fourball and the winners were Michael Cummins and Pat Cuddy with 42 points from Stevie Keane and Adrian Rushe with 41, Mick Hally and Gerry O’Connor with 41, Joe Carmody and Liam McCannon with 40 while fifth spot was filled by John Guilfoyle and Johnny Cullinan, also with 40 points.                      

Lahinch
THE sudden and untimely death of Paul McInerney, a prominent club member, rocked Lahinch his week.

A member of a well-known Local family, Paul joined Lahinch as a junior member and quickly became an accomplished golfer. He represented the club on numerous teams over the years including the senior cup team that won a Munster title in 1984. He also competed in a number of South of Ireland Championships.

Paul’s sporting talents were not just confined to golf as he played minor and U-21 football for Clare and represented Shannon RFC.

Paul’s family is steeped in the tradition of Lahinch Golf Club where he has served on a number of committees currently serving on the men’s committee and club council.

Paul’s enthusiastic, vibrant and warm personality mixed with good humour will be remembered by all who knew him.

Lahinch manager Paddy Keane this week extended sympathy to Paul’s wife, Martina; children, Laura, Fiona and Sophie; mother, Susan; brothers, Pádraig, Thomas and Declan; sisters, Siobhán and Colette and their extended families.

The winners of the ladies’ scotch foursomes on the championship course on Saturday were Olivia Lucas (7) and Angela Cullinan (12) with 38 points.

In Sunday’s men’s singles, the winner was Liam Duggan (13) with 41 points from James Meade (16) with 40 points and Stephen Hennessy (4), also with 40 points.

Portumna

PORTUMNA held a 14-hole competition at the weekend when Brendan Naughton junior (8) won the category 0-10 section with 29 points. Other prize winners were Joe Forde (14) (category 11-14) with 32 points, Philip Harte (15), (category 15-18) with 34 points, Iggy Broder (19), (category 19) and over with 32 points and Patsy Quitley (12) who won the seniors section with 33 points.

The winner of the ladies’ 14-hole competition was Pauline McEvoy with 28 points. 

The club open three-ball continues until April.

Woodstock

THE seniors’ weekly scramble at Woodstock was a team-of-three scramble over 15 holes and it was won by Seamus Kelly, Brendan Arthur and Tom Dormer.

The club singles at Woodstock at the weekend was won by Michael Nugent (12) with 46 points from David McCarthy (10) who returned a similar score.

In week three of the spring league, the format was a modified scramble and the winners were Richard Pyne (8), Brian Mulcahy (14), Donal Brogan (16) and Jack Duffy (25) with 64 points.
Week four of the league will have a four-ball betterball format this week while the club competition will be a singles.

This Sunday, the captains, Eugene Phillips and Margaret Ann Killeen along with seniors captain Donal Kenny, will drive-in to office at 2.30pm and this will be followed by a nine-hole scramble.

Clarecastle

CLARECASTLE society will hold its AGM in Power’s this Thursday at 8.30pm. The first outing of 2013 will be to Galway Bay on March 16.

Gort

THE men’s 18-hole singles Stableford competition at Gort at the weekend was won by Declan O’Halloran (15) with 40 points from Eamon Morrissey (5) with 39, Derek Kinsella (17) with 39 points, Pat Craddock (19). The gross was won by David Quirke (4) with 33 points.

In the Monday open, the winner was Malcolm Reeves (9) with 41 points.

Kilrush

IN last week’s men’s seniors’ competition at Kilrush, the winners were John Robinson, Brendan McNamara and Aeneas O’Connor from Bill Murphy, Denis F Nagle and Tom McGrath with third place filled by Billy Clarke, Tom O’Dea, Paddy Carmody and Noel Thornton.

The qualifying rounds for the spring league were completed last weekend and the play-off will take place on Sunday, March 24. A draw for partners will take place prior to the play-off date.

Sunday’s singles competition was won by Finbarr McMahon with 29 points.

East Clare

IN the men’s 18-hole singles at East Clare at the weekend, the winner was Kieran Kennedy (15) with 46 points from Derek Kenny (9) with 43 and Patsy Kett (12) with  42.

The winners of the men’s seniors’ competition were Tony McNulty, John Fleming and Jack Hogan from Kevin Burke and John Fielding with third place filled by Eamon Long, Kieran Gibbons and Brendan Moloney.
In the ladies’ 18-hole singles, the winner was Trish Kerr with 45 points from Catherine Murphy with 43 and Noreen Ryan.

The senior ladies’ competition was won by Trish Kerr, Ann O’Connor and Phil Burke from Mary Collins, Pauline Nugent, Hannah Guinnane and Jean Fleming.

The men’s competition will be a four-ball betterball, while the winter league continues with 14-hole and nine-hole singles to be completed by March 15.

Haven Arms

THE Castle Course in Lahinch was the venue for an outing for the Haven Arms Society on Saturday last. The winner was Michael Miniter from Declan Marrinan with Seamus O’Doherty in third spot. Marian Saunders won the ladies’ section.

Sixmilebridge

SIXMILEBRIDGE society will hold an outing to Woodstock this Saturday when the tee will be reserved from 10am.

Guinness golf

DOONBEG will host the Guinness Golf Series from March 14 to 24 when fourball and singles competitions will run concurrently.

Players can enter both singles and fourball on any given day for the one entry fee. Equally, golfers can enter singles only although they can only do this on one occasion during the 11 days and can enter the four-ball competition on as many days as they wish.

Spanish Point

THE winner of the Tuesday seniors at Spanish Point was Tony Crowley with 44 points. The winner of the Friday open singles was Gabriel Looney with 32 points. The winners of the annual men’s club fundraising scramble were Eoghan O’Loughlin, Gerry O’Loughlin, Brendan Sexton, and Bernie O’Halloran with 53.7 nett.

There will be an 18-hole singles Stableford this weekend. As the winter schedule is now over, competition will run according to the fixtures list.

Angela Dowling (33) was the winner of last week’s ladies’ competition with a score of 34 points from Bernadette O’Gorman (24) on 31 points. The Easter hamper competition will take place on Sunday. A draw for partners will take place at 1.45pm.

Pitch and putt

TOMMY Kelly was the overall winner of the Mickey Kerin Shield at the Clare Road on Sunday.

The senior section was won by Declan Sheedy while Billy Griffen won the intermediate section, with Gerry Kierce taking the junior honours.
