THE glory days of the late ’90s were remembered recently when a delegation from Doora-Barefield Ladies’ Football Club visited Croke Park in support of club stalwart, Treas Molloy, who had been selected as the Munster Tesco Club Person of the Year for 2011.
President of the Ladies’ Gaelic Football Association, Pat Quill announced that out of the four provincial winners, Treas was selected as the overall winner of the Tesco LGFA Club Person of the Year Award and she was presented with a second award. In her speech, Treas said she was accepting it on behalf of all club volunteers throughout the country who love their sport and their community and are only too happy to be involved.
Club chairman, Sean Lenihan, while introducing Treas, said she was “a Cork woman by birth, who had the good sense to settle in the Banner County and for that, the Doora Barefield Club will be forever thankful”. While accepting that the club had very many people worthy of winning the Volunteer of the Year, Treas stood out for the Trojan work she does on and off the pitch.
“Through her long association with the club, she has been on various committees, is a team trainer, a confidante, a chaperone, a substitute mother, a sandwich maker, a jersey washer, a first-aid assistant, a referee and whatever else is required morning, noon or night,” Seán said.
“She is always available to drive girls to matches and is the first to sign up and the last to go home on flag days and church-gate collections. Most of all, she is a friend to all in the club and everything she does is done with a smile, a sense of fun and in the knowledge that she is helping people and helping the club.
“That is why it is absolutely right and proper that she is acknowledged by receiving such an award and while all club volunteers give willingly of their time, it is nice to have it recognised and acknowledged in this way,” the chairman added.
