DOONBEG will host its third annual Seafood Festival this weekend. The festival is aimed at family participation and will be launched on Friday at 8pm when the Tulla Pipe Band march through the Long Village.
That evening will also feature an oyster eating event and a Battle of the Pubs singing competition.
A highlight of the festival will be a series of cookery demonstrations from a number of top Irish and international chefs, which will take place in the Doonbeg Village Hall.
Award-winning executive chef Wade Murphy from The Lodge at Doonbeg will be joined by local chefs Adrian Medvec of Morrissey’s and Peter Cadilak of Tubridy’s. Additions to the line-up will include sushi chef Hisashi Kumagai from The Radisson in Galway, Odren Lucey from the Killarney Park Hotel and Val Lynam from Green Olive Catering.
A funfair will be held in Doonbeg on Saturday, the farmers’ market is expected to feature 20 stalls, while Tommy Honan will be organising boat trips. David Ryan will run kayaking trips, while Seánie Honan will give a demonstration of currach racing.
On Saturday evening, anyone with a streak of adventure will be afforded the opportunity to mount the bull ride, which will be located in the village green.
Anyone with some reserve energy can burn it off by taking part in the sumo wrestling. The weekend will also incorporate a duck race, treasure hunt, go-carting and a presentation from Dr Simon Berrow on dolphin and shark life.
“It’s the biggest programme that we’ve run yet and our ambition is to continue to broaden what’s available,” Joe Russell, general manager of Doonbeg Golf Club, commented.
On Sunday a vintage rally, held in memory of the late Pat Moroney, will start at 2pm.
