Doonbeg Links captaincy for Dillon

DOONBEG Links Golf Club reviewed a very successful year at their annual meeting on Friday night when the following officers were elected: president, Timmy Killeen; captain, Nigel Dillon; secretary, James Griffin; treasurer, Seanie Moloney; competition secretary, Kevin Hayes; handicap committee, John Maguire, Diarmaid O’Donnell, Declan Conway; Jimmy Bruen (captain); Diarmaid O’Donnell; Pierce Purcell (captain); Pat Cotter.
The captain’s drive in will take place on Sunday, January 27 at 9.30am followed by a scramble.


Ennis

AFTER the new captain’s (Sean Fitzpatrick) drive-in on Thursday last, Ennis seniors held a team four competition. The winners with 84 points were Michael Kerin, Seamus Frehill, Michael Vaughan and Andy Cregan.

They were followed by Sean Fitzpatrick, Terry Hughes, Michael A Considine and Luke Coote with 80 points; Paul Mockler, George Tuohy, Pat Rutherford and Joe O’Brien with 80; Bernard Hanrahan, Willie Moloney, Ollie Kenneally and George Dilger with 80; Michael Dempsey, John White, Tom Purcell and Tom Fox with 79 with sixth spot filled by Michael Butler, Sean O’Gorman, Willie Delaney and Pat McInerney also with 79.
In the men’s 14-hole fourball club competition on Saturday, the winners were Martin Meehan and Tony Lawlor with 37 points.

Sunday’s fourball competition was won by Ian Myatt and Noel O’Connor with 39 points from Ned Ryan and Tim Kelly with 38. In third place with 36 points were Eamonn Kelly and Brendan Considine.


Kilrush

THE winners of the men’s seniors outing at Kilrush last Wednesday were John Robinson, David Eastham and John Stapleton from Jimmy McSwiggan, Maurice Roche and Barry Taylor with third spot filled by Murt Collins, Sean Moran, Pat Shannon and PJ Maher.

John McGrath was the winner of the singles on Sunday with 29 points, while Sean Moran was the winner of the previous week’s competition with 30 points. There will be a similar competition this Sunday.

The captains for 2013, Michael Hogan and Margaret Donnelly will drive-in to office on this Sunday at 1pm. A scramble will follow after which there will be a social evening in the clubhouse where the presentation of prizes will take place.

The presentation for the Kilrush Credit Union Winter League will also take place this Sunday in the clubhouse.


Gort

NOEL Ruane (18) was the winner of the 18-hole singles competition at Gort at the weekend with 46 points. He had two to spare over Tommy Kelly (16) with third spot filled by Andy Murphy (19) with 41 points. The gross was won by Trevor Cummins (6) with 35 points. There will be a similar competition this weekend.

The ladies’ spring league has commenced and will continue until Thursday, March 21.


Dromoland

THE winner of the singles Stableford competition at Dromoland last week was Ray Boyce with 41 points from Niall Geraghty on 39 and Ray O’Neill on 37. In the junior section, Gordon O’Neill was the winner with 33 points.

The annual general meeting of the ladies’ section was held recently at which the following officers were elected: lady captain, Maria Nolan; vice-captain, Majella Cotgreave; secretary, Geraldine Ryan; treasurer, Annette Ryan; handicap secretary, Mary O’Donnell.

The ladies’ winter league has commenced and will be played over the next nine weeks.


Lahinch

THE annual Latymon Cup fixture between Ennistymon and Lahinch was played for on Saturday. Ennistymon emerged as the winners on a 13-9 scoreline.

In the ladies’ singles Stableford competition on the Castle Course on Saturday, the winner was Valerie Shannon (7) with 34 points from Bernadette Scanlan (27) with a similar score.

A similar competition for men was won by Michael McMahon (26) with 39 points from John O’Gorman (20) with 38 points.

The ladies fourball Stableford competition on the championship course on Sunday was won by Jenny Hennessy (5) and Angela Cullinan (12) with 41 points.


Woodstock

IN the club singles at Woodstock at the weekend, the winner was Frank McEnery (13) with 44 points. The gross was won by Kieran Cunnane (scratch) with 36 points.

There will be a similar competition this weekend.

Entries are currently being accepted for the spring league, which will be played over six weeks. The draw will be made on February 3.


East Clare

THE winners of the men’s fourball at East Clare on Sunday were Tony McMahon and Michael Noonan.

Last week’s ladies’ seniors winners were Noreen Ryan, Tricia Kerr, Mary Joe Minogue and Lillian Nihill followed by Margaret MacNamara, Mary Stritch and Ina Reddan.

The first round of the winter league is completed and Round 2 runs until February 17 inclusive. The format for Round 2 is a 15-hole fourball with two cards to count from men, ladies and mixed combinations. In addition for the next five weeks the re-entry nine-hole singles is also on.

This weekend, the men’s club will hold a team-of-two scramble.


Spanish Point

LAST Sunday, the Spanish Point captains for 2013, Eoghan O’Loughlin and Helen Sullivan drove into office in the presence of a large attendance.

A team-of-four scramble over nine holes was played with a shotgun start. This was followed by the presentation of prizes and a social evening in the clubhouse. The winners of the team prize were Geraldine Reddan, Kieran Madigan, Michael Hehir and Gerry O’Loughlin with a birdie burst that brought them in at five under gross.

Competitions continue with the course in good condition despite the recent rains and the seniors’ open on Tuesday was won by Tom Mernagh (club president) off six with a score of 42 points. The recent men’s singles was well supported and scoring was very good. First place went to John Meere (15) with 42 points followed by John Fitzgerald (18) also on 42 points. A full schedule of weekend competitions is in place for the next two months and the seniors’ open continues each Tuesday. Timesheets and details are in the clubhouse.


Portumna

THE drive-in for the captains and president of 2013 will take place at Portumna on Sunday at 12 noon. The new officers are Suzanne Corcoran (president), Maureen McEvon (lady captain) and Martin Carty (men’s captain).


Pitch and putt

AT the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club on Sunday, the two-ball scramble was won by Billy Griffin and Garath Kerin from Kevin Woods and Gerry Kierce.
