Do a Lap In My Shoes

Former Clare manager Ger Loughnane, who suffered from acute myeloid leukaemia last year, will lead out the survivors and supporters lap at a major fundraising walk later this month.

The Feakle native, who steered Clare hurlers to All-Ireland glory in 1995 and 1997, will lead out walkers and runners at 12noon on Saturday, August 25, at the Lees Road Track, Ennis.

Former general election candidate, Dr John Hillery, will lead the memory lap for people who have died of cancer, while relay teams will head off at 11am.

Organised by the Clare Cancer Support Centre, in association with the Clare Sports Partnership and Ennis Town Council, The Clare Champion is the main media sponsor of the inaugural event.

The GAA world was stunned to hear the former Clare manager had cancer but, thankfully, he seems to be winning his battle with leukaemia. He received treatment in St James’s Hospital, Dublin.

Having decided to retire as principal of St Aidan’s National School, Shannon, at 58, he has resumed his position as a GAA television pundit, analysing the All-ireland Senior Hurling Championship.
He said working on the family farm at a very young age built up his capacity to deal with physical hardship, which he believes helped his recovery.

Dr Hillery said he felt humbled to be launching the walk with Ger Loughnane and is delighted to see him looking so well on RTÉ following his cancer treatment. Praising the Clare Cancer Support Centre for all the services it provides, the consultant psychiatrist said the walk could encourage people to look after their own health and well-being. as early intervention is crucial in treatment.

He noted the centre provides valuable information and a wide range of services for cancer sufferers and their families.
