LEADERS Wolfe Tones and Kilmaley both dropped points in Round 4of the Division 1B League at the weekend. The Tones suffered their first defeat of the campaign when they failed to match a lively Smith O’Brien’s outfit in a game played at Shannon on Thursday evening.
On Sunday evening, Broadford reopened their pitch, Glenomra Park, having carried out improvements and they marked the occasion with an impressive performance against Kilmaley which ended in a draw.
Smith O’Brien’s 2-13 Wolfe Tones 1-11
SMITH O’Brien’s collected their first points of this season’s Clare Champion Cup (Division 1B) when they defeated hitherto unbeaten Wolfe Tones at Shannon on Thursday evening. This was the Killaloe side’s best performance of the campaign to date and their victory was deserved.
Helped by a goal from Dean Sinnott, the winners led at the break on a score of 1-6 to 0-6. They went onto stretch their advantage to seven points in the third quarter before Wolfe Tones hit their best spell and fought back to level helped by goals from David Reidy and Daithi O’Connell.
Smith O’Brien’s responded with a goal from Kevin Walsh with five minutes remaining and while the Tones tried to get back, they could only manage a point in the remaining time.
The winners’ goalie Mark McInerney excelled on the evening, while others to impress were Trevor Howard, Seamus Gleeson, Micheál Ryan and Shane O’Brien.

Kilmaley 1-15 Broadford 1-15
THE meeting of Kilmaley and Broadford at the latter’s well-appointed venue, proved an entertaining affair on Sunday evening.
Both sides will feel they missed opportunities over the hour but the home side probably missed the better chances.
They certainly had the best player on view in Cathal Chaplin, who ruled the midfield exchanges throughout.
They started well and raced into an 0-5 to 0-1 lead in the first quarter. Kilmaley had the better of the last 10 minutes of this half and when Jim Hickey sounded the short whistle, there was just a point between them with Broadford, having had the aid of the breeze, ahead on a score of 0-6 to 0-5.
The teams were level four minutes into the second half when the visitors got a great boost in the form of a Diarmuid McMahon goal. It was a fortunate score as his effort from 60m bounced past Cian O’Brien in the Broadford goal.
The home side, to their credit, hit back and a superb overhead strike from Pádraig Hickey found the net and brought them to within a point of the visitors. Kilmaley went four clear again as the three-quarter stage approached and they were three ahead with seven minutes remaining.
Two from Cathal Chaplin and one from Pádraig Hickey had the teams level with three minutes to play before substitute Declan Teefy put the home side in front. Kilmaley had the final say when midfielder Ken Kennedy hit his 12th point of the evening to tie up the teams for the third and final time.

Éire Óg 3-11 Tubber 1-15
ÉIRE Óg led by seven points at half-time in this tie on Monday and they stretched this to nine early in the second half before the home side fought back to go two points clear.
Two Éire Óg goals from Davy O’Halloran and Niall McMahon in the space of a minute turned the tie back in the town side’s favour and they went on to record victory and keep their promotion homes very much alive. Thomas Downes scored the winners’ first-half goal, while the majority of their points came from Danny Russell and O’Halloran. Eamonn Taaffe was the scorer of the Tubber goal.

A HAT-trick of goals from Jarlath Colleran helped St Joseph’s to this win over Feakle at the East Clare club’s venue on Monday.
Feakle had the better of the first-half exchanges and they led at half-time on a score of 3-2 to 1-5. However, the visitors got control after the break and proved the stronger side in the second half.
Colleran was their top scorer with 3-4, while their other goal came from Greg Lyons.
Feakle’s goalscorers were Kenneth and Cathal Collins, Justin Nelson and Oisín Donnellan, while Gary Guilfoyle contributed all but one of their points.

O’Callaghan’s Mills 3-19 Ballyea 0-21
A STRONG first-half display helped O’Callaghan’s Mills defeat Ballyea in this Division 1B tie in Ballyea on Monday. Goals from Adrian Flaherty and James McMahon helped them to a 2-11 to 0-10 lead at the interval. The home side fought back well in the second period with some excellent scores from Tony Kelly, Gearóid O’Connell and Francie O’Reilly, which cut the deficit to four points but a third goal from the visitors from Cathal McKeogh with eight minutes to go put the game beyond the reach of a gallant Ballyea side.
