KILRUSH Tidy Towns Committee chairman Murt Collins has expressed dissatisfaction at the weekend rubbish issue in Kilrush.
He told The Clare Champion that when representatives of 2010 national Tidy Towns winners Emily (Tipperary) visited the town about two months ago, he had to pick up rubbish from some of the streets himself in an effort to avoid embarrassment.
“It was so bad I didn’t want them to give them a bad impression. I went around that morning to pick it up myself,” Murt explained.
The committee chairman says that if the town council don’t improve on their weekend rubbish collection from June 1, volunteers will have to ensure that Kilrush is kept reasonably tidy at weekends.
“We are very anxious that the town council would employ somebody for the summer over the weekend to pick up the rubbish. If that doesn’t succeed then we would have to get voluntary pickers from the Tidy Towns committee,” he confirmed.
“We definitely need somebody from the council to pick up the rubbish from June 1 on. It’s very disappointing. They should be picking up the rubbish nearly every weekend, especially Sunday morning after Saturday night,” he noted.
Stating that Moore Street was covered with rubbish last weekend, Mr Collins believes that more rubbish bins must be provided in the town centre area. Many were so full last weekend that no more rubbish could fit in them.
“It was mentioned in the past that there’s very few bins. We’re not getting any better. We will be meeting the council again this month and I’ll be raising that point again,” he said.
Last September, Kilrush collected a third successive gold medal in Category D, which is for towns of between 2,501 and 5,000 people. The town went up one point, to 298, on their 2008 results.
Emily from Tipperary won the 2009 award, finishing on 305 points, seven ahead of Kilrush.
The maximum total achievable is 400 points.
