THE president, vice-president and director general of the Law Society of Ireland addressed members of Clare Law Association at a recent meeting in the Old Ground Hotel.
Among those in attendance were Ken Murphy, director general of the Law Society of Ireland; James McCourt, president of society and locally-based solicitor John Shaw, who is vice-president of the Law Society of Ireland.
The Law Society delegation met with Clare solicitors following developments in practice following the Legal Services Regulation Bill.
Minister for Justice Alan Shatter has advocated strongly for change across the entire legal landscape. The minister attended the Law Society’s annual conference recently and expressed his appreciation of the “highly constructive engagement of the Law Society with the process of developing the Bill”, including the development of new complaints and disciplinary provisions.
Clare Law Association was delighted to be visited by the representatives of the Law Society of Ireland to discuss changes in practice and to provide feedback in respect of developments in the profession.
John Shaw is due to assume the presidency this November and has been an active member of the council for the Law Society of Ireland for the past 14 years. He presently chairs the Law Society Task Force.
John is a partner in the firm of Michael Houlihan & Partners Solicitors and follows in the footsteps of Michael Houlihan, formerly a partner of the same firm, who held the position of president of the Law Society in 1983. John is currently the solicitor for Clare County Council.
