COUNCILLOR Pat Daly is set to be named as the new Mayor of Clare this Friday, making him the fifth Ennis councillor to take the chains of office.
The Fianna Fáil councillor will become mayor as part of a power sharing arrangement agreed by councillors and negotiated by Councillor Tommy Brennan back in 2004.
Councillor Daly will receive the chains of office from outgoing mayor Councillor Pat Hayes at the local authority’s annual general meeting.
Councillor Daly follows in the footsteps of former mayors of Clare and Ennis councillors Michael Considine, Tadhg MacConmara, Peter Considine and Tommy Brennan.
Councillor Daly will be no stranger to the role, having acted as deputy mayor to Councillor Tommy Brennan previously.
The Ennis East Electoral Area councillor from Gallows Hill first ran for election to Clare County Council in 1999 when he topped the poll with 1,351 votes. He was re-elected in 2004 and 2009.
Before entering political life, he worked for his family business in Parnell Street after finishing school in St Flannan’s College. He was the first chairman of the Parnell Street Traders back in the early ’80s.
As well as being a councillor, he has worked as constituency secretary for Tony Killeen from 1993 to 2011. Councillor Daly is also heavily involved in the GAA locally as chairman of Éire Óg.
