Cusack Road next up for digital speed cameras

STATE-of-the-art digital speed signs, which have been credited with reducing the speed of traffic on the Tulla Road, are set to be further rolled out on Cusack Road.
Calls have been made to put in place even more of the solar-powered signs in the Ennis West electoral area.
At a recent meeting of Ennis West Electoral Area Councillor Tony Mulqueen urged the council install more of the signs saying, “They are proving very helpful to road users making them aware of speed zones”.
“They are excellent, of all of the things I have seen done over the last few years, they are just brilliant.”
Eamon O’Dea, senior executive engineer for the Ennis Electoral Area informed the meeting, “Ennis Town Council provided four digital speed signs on the Tulla Road as part of their 2011 road works programme. Provision has been made in the Ennis Town Council Roadwork’s programme for the provision of two further digital speed signs on Cusack Road.”
He stated that in meetings with the Garda Traffic Corps, Cusack Road was deemed a suitable location. “It’s a busy road,” he said. He outlined that if more signs are to be erected in future years, the Quin Road is a route that could be considered. He added that the signs cost €5,500 each.
The four electronic displays installed on the Tulla Road by Ennis Town Council last year have already been hailed a success. The display signs between the Tulla Road Railway Bridge and the Roslevan Roundabout were installed for road design purposes and the recording of traffic flow data. They have been credited with reducing the speed of traffic in the area by 10k an hour.
In another show of support for solar power at the Ennis West meeting, Councillor James Breen reiterated his call for a solar-powered light to be installed at Kilnamona Cross.
Councillor Breen outlined that the Kilnamona community are prepared to pay half of the cost for the erection of a solar light at the cross. “The solar light could be put in a place that would not cause a distraction to motorists,” he said. Mr O’Dea stated that the council would look at the location.
