Dates for the various golf cups and shield competitions for 2012 have been finalised and draws were announced this week.
On Saturday and Sunday, May 12 and 13, Lahinch will be the venue for the North Munster section of the Jimmy Bruen Shield. The pairings will be: Doonbeg Links v Kilrush with the winners to play Woodstock; Ennis v Shannon; Dromoland Castle v Lahinch; East Clare v Kilkee with the winners to play Spanish Point. The Munster semi-finals and final will take place at Fota Island Golf Club on Sunday, July 15.
Kilkee will host the North Munster section of the Pierce Purcell Shield on Saturday and Sunday, May 26 and 27, where Woodstock will begin the defence of their national title. The pairings are: Ennis v Lahinch with the winners to play Kilrush; Doonbeg Links v Spanish Point; Dromoland Castle v Kilkee; Shannon v Woodstock. The provincial semi-finals and final will also take place in Fota Island on Sunday, July 15.
In the Barton Shield, the North Munster section will be played at East Clare on Saturday and Sunday, June 9 and 10. The pairings are: Shannon v Ennis with the winners to play Limerick; Roscrea v Woodstock; Rathbane v Nenagh; Charleville v Dromoland Castle with the winners to play Lahinch; Adare Manor v East Clare with the winners to play Castletroy.
The provincial finals will be at Kinsale on August 11 and 12.
In the Irish Mixed Foursomes competition, Dromoland Castle will host the North Munster area competition on June 16 and 17. The pairings are: Shannon v Kilrush with the winners to play East Clare; Spanish Point v Kilkee; Ennis v Dromoland Castle; Lahinch v Woodstock with the winners to play Doonbeg Links. The Munster finals will be at Youghal on August 19.
Kilrush is the venue for the North Munster section of the Irish Junior Cup on June 30 and July 1, the pairings are Lahinch v Ennis; Shannon v East Clare; Dromoland Castle v Kilrush; Kilkee v Woodstock. The Munster final is set for Kinsale on August 11 and 12.
Lahinch member elected to Munster branch
Well-known Lahinch club member Kevin Glynn has been elected to the Munster Branch Provincial Council. The Lahinch teacher devotes many hours each week to the coaching of junior golfers in the club.
In the monthly medal stroke competition at Lahinch on Saturday, Eamon Ryan (15) was the winner with 69 nett from Walter O’Brien (12) with 71 and Jimmy Condon (11) with 72.
In the men’s singles turkey competition on Sunday, Aaron McNulty (6) was the winner with 40 points from Richard Meaney (15) with 36 points, Kevin Glynn (9) with 36 points and Eugene Judge (8) with 35 points.
Last week’s ladies singles Stableford competition was won by Trish Kelleher (25) with 39 points from Anna Glynn (17) with 32 points and Pat Ramsey (22) with 32 points. Val Shannon won the gross with 22 points.
East Clare
The men’s hamper competition was played for at East Clare at the weekend when Dermot O’Donoghue (5) won category one with 32 points. Brendan Foley (10) won category two with 45 points while Pat Stritch (21) won category three with 43 points.
On Sunday, the captain’s Catherine Minogue and Kevin Mannion will drive-in to office. There will be a draw for partners at 10am followed by the drive-in and a nine-hole scramble.
The annual general meeting of the joint club took place last Wednesday when Sean Ahern was elected as chairman while Leo Mannion and Michael O’Hanlon continue as treasurer and secretary respectively.
Dromoland
The winner of the weekend turkey competition at Dromoland was Seamus McEnery with 40 points.
Gort
Colin Whelan was the winner of the 18-hole singles Stableford competition at Gort at the weekend with 37 points from Eamonn Morrissey who had a similar score. John Greer won the gross with 33 points.
There will be an 18-hole singles competition this weekend.
In the ladies 13 singles, Phil Mulkerrins was the winner from Gabrielle Warnock and they were followed by Sara Broderick, Josie Collins, Siobhan Forde, Ann Jordan, Patricia Skehill, Margaret McMahon, Margaret Whelan and Sue Madden.
Woodstock
The AGM of the ladies section at Woodstock was held recently and the following officers for 2011 were elected: lady captain, Anne Marie Russell; ex-office, Joan Barrett; secretary, Clare Hall; treasurer, Liz Dinan; handicap secretary, Marianne McGough; competition secretary, Áine Burke; committee members, Patricia Leyden, Jenny McElhinney, Patricia Graham, and Bernie Power.
The following award-winners were confirmed: silver medal winner, Mary Sadlier; silver spoon, Mary Sadlier; bronze medal winner, Teresa Sherlock, Sheelagh Garvey; matchplay winner, Kathleen McEnery; runner-up, Fran Feighery; October league winner, Joan Barrett; runner-up, Mairead Carroll; Christmas hamper winners, Mairead Carroll, Mary Gleeson, Bernie Power; golfer of the year, Mary Sadlier.
Ennis Seniors
Ennis Seniors held a team of three ten-hole competition on Thursday last when the winners, with 37 points, were Ollie Kenneally, Sean O’Gorman and Jim Scully. In second place with 36 points were Ned Ryan, Michael Kerin and Bill Leacy, followed in third spot by Ferdie O’Donoghue, Peadar Cosgrove and Tom McGrath with 35 points. In fourth place, also on 35 points, were by Denis O’Ceallaigh, Michael Torpey and Noel Pilkington.
Shannon
In the weekend’s men’s singles competition at Shannon, Paul Kilbridge (16) was the winner with 37 points from Michael Cummins (16) with 36 points. Raymond Hehir (14) was third with 35 points.
Last week’s singles was won by Patrick Griffin (17) with 38 points from John Gubbins (14) who had a similar score. Dermot Glynn (13) was third with 37 points while Fintan Ward (8) won the gross with 26 points.
In the Wednesday singles, John O’Connor (20) was the winner with 34 points from Liam Hogan (11) who had 33 points.
Last week’s ladies singles competition was won by Mary Carroll (26) with 24 points from Jyoti Patel (3) who also had 24 points. Sheila Treacy (25) was third and she also scored 24 points.
In the Calcul ladies team event that went on throughout the year, the winners with 95 points were Sheila Treacy (26), Pauline Kilmartin (26) and Margaret McCarthy (29). In second place with 93 points were Carmel Regan (21), Niamh O’Callaghan (24) and Eleanor O’Brien (24).
Spanish Point
Last week saw the playing of the final ‘major’ of the year at Spanish Point when the Christmas hamper singles competition was played for over Saturday and Sunday.
The format was singles stroke and both days were very windy with heavy rain on Sunday morning. Despite these conditions scoring was good and Brendan Sexton (15) continued his consistent form to bring in a nett score of 61 (par 66) to win by one stroke from Jim Marrinan (17). In third place was golfer of the year, Bernie O’Halloran (19) with 63 nett, followed by Brian O’Loughlin (10) with 65 nett.
The Friday open was very well supported with a large number of visitors entering. Stephen Croke (15) East Clare won with 36 points from Dave Franklin (9) also East Clare, with 33 points.
The senior open continues each Tuesday and an open will be on each Friday for the winter. For members, the turkey competition resume this weekend with time-sheets in the clubhouse.
Clare Teachers
The Clare Teachers society held an outing to Ennis last Saturday when the format was a team of three.
The winners, with 94 points, were John McNeilis, John Doyle and Hilda McHugh followed by Joe Griffin, Peter Quinn and Áine Burke with 89. In third spot, also with 89 points, were Jim McMahon, Tim McGillicuddy, Conor Murphy and Seamus Frehill followed by Michael Kilmartin, Jack Keane and Sean Daly with 87, Michael Cummins, Leo Quinlan and Joan Murphy with 85, L Clancy, A McGillicuddy and E Daly with 79, M McGough, J McHugh and G Tuohy with 69.
The society’s next outing will be to Lahinch on Friday, January 6.
Portumna
The men’s 14-hole competition at Portumna at the weekend attracted a big turnout. In the 0-10 category, John Cleary (5) was the winner with 33 points. The other winners were Joe Forde (13) (category 11 to 14), Phonsie Ryan (17) with 37 points (category 15-18), Martin McDonagh (22) with 36 points (category 19 and over) and John Kennedy (15) with 29 points (seniors section).
Pitch and putt
The Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club will hold an EGM on this Sunday at 9.30am. The meeting will be followed by the club’s Christmas competition.
