THE Clare Champion-sponsored Cumann na mBunscoil hurling and camogie finals have provided lots of entertainment for all involved over the past decade.
That trend continued at Cusack Park on Wednesday when six finals in this year’s programme took place. Six more finals will take place this Thursday.
Members of the Clare senior hurling panel were in attendance to see the stars of the future in action. John Conlon, who played in a number of finals with Clonlara National School and Fergal Lynch, now a member of the teaching staff at Quin, were interested spectators.
There was some outstanding play on Wednesday with the Division 1 decider proving particularly exciting. Ennis CBS emerged as the winners when they scored a one-point victory over the title holders, Clarecastle, 2-6 to 2-5. Goals from Matthew Davenport and Cathal Ruane played a huge part in their win. Clarecastle’s goals came from David Barry and Cian Donnelly.
The B teams from the schools met in the shield final which the CBS also won narrowly
In the Division 2 final, Cratloe emerged winners with a 2-3 to 1-4 victory over Knockanean. Billy Connors scored both goals for the winners while Oisín Ross was the goalscorer for Knockanean.
The Division 3 final resulted in a 4-15 to 3-9 victory for Kilmaley over Barefield. Sean O’Loughlin hit 2-6 for the winners with Peter Ronan contributing 2-0 and Eanna McMahon adding 0-5. Barefield goalkeeper Daniel O’Keeffe made some great saves in this final.
The Division 4 hurling final was played last Thursday and an outstanding performance from Tobias O’Meara helped Killanena to a 2-11 to 1-4 victory over Quin.
The Division 2 camogie final on Wednesday saw Scoil Mhuire Corofin take on Scoil na Mainistreach from Quin. At the end of a lively contest, Corofin lifted the trophy having emerged victorious on a scoreline of 7-4 to 2-1. The winners’ goals came from Louise Browne, the captain, Corina McMahon and Shannon Walsh while Eve Ryan and Emma Deegan scored the goals for Quin.
In the Division 4 camogie final, Kilmurry had a convincing win over Barefield. Their goalscorers were Aoibhe Frazer, Ella Donnellan and Sarah Moloney.
Thursdays finals include hurling, camogie and football and the action commences at 11am with the Division 3 camogie decider between Kilmaley and Broadford. The Division 1 camogie final is an all parish affair with Inagh-Clounanaha taking on Kilnamona.
