Council seeking footpath works funds

GALWAY County Council will request funding for footpaths in Gort to be made wheelchair accessible, it confirmed recently.

Councillor Bridie Willers asked the council to “ensure that funding is sought from the NRA for the coming year to make paths in Gort wheelchair accessible especially in the area from the AIB bank to the post office”.

The county secretary Michael Owens told the councillors that funding will be requested under the low-cost safety schemes in 2013 from the NRA for the proposal.

Speaking after the meeting, Councillor Willers said she would continue to pursue the issue adding, “We have to ensure that all paths are accessible for both young and old and that special consideration is afforded to those who are less mobile or wheelchair bound. Because Gort is a heritage town and there are a considerable number of steps, it is difficult to get right. Some other paths in the town badly need resurfacing and hopefully this can be addressed in the short term.”
