Council issues temporary boil notice

Clare County Council has issued a temporary boil notice to consumers on the Spancilhill-Clooney Group Water Scheme.

The decision to impose the temporary boil notice was taken in consultation with the Health Service Executive after a sample taken on Tuesday from the group scheme showed a coliform content of greater than 200 per 100 millilitres, none of which were E coli.

“The notice is precautionary, pending further investigation,” stated Sean Ward, senior engineer with the council’s water services.

“Clare County Council took samples on Wednesday from a number of sites both on the council’s side and the group’s side of the boundary point and the results of these were due on Thursday morning.

“When the results are known, Clare County Council will make contact with the Health Services Executive to decide what further action if any is required, with a view to removing the boil notice as early as possible,” Mr Ward explained.

The boil notice advises people to boil water before consumption. The term “consumption” includes drinking, making drinks with the water, making ice, preparing salads and other foods which are not cooked before eating and brushing teeth and gargling.

Water can be used without boiling for personal hygiene, bathing and flushing toilets.

The Spancilhill-Clooney Group Water Scheme serves an area along the Ennis to Tulla road from the junction with the M18 bypass out to the crossroads just past Clooney church, as well as houses along a number of side roads off the man road.

“Water is supplied to the group scheme by Clare County Council from the Drumcliffe water treatment plant.

The council is responsible for ensuring the quality of water as far as the boundary point where the group’s main connects to the council’s main on the Tulla Road, and the group is responsible for the quality of water from there onwards,” Mr Ward added.
