Cork golfer on the mark for senior scratch cup

There was keen competition for the senior scratch cup at Shannon on Sunday when Mark Shanahan (+2) from Castlemartyr emerged as the winner with one shot to spare over Eddie McCormack (+2) from Galway. In third spot, also on 147, was Gary O’Flaherty (+1) from Cork Golf Club followed by Pat Murray (+3) from Limerick.

Dundrum’s Sean Alley (scratch) won the first 18 with 74 while Eoin McGuinness (2) won the second 18 with 70.

In the 36-hole nett section, Bryan Power (5) from Shannon was the winner with 147 from his clubmate Paul (O’Neill (1) with 148.

In the men’s open singles last Wednesday, Pádraig Cahillane was the winner with 38 points from Adam McMahon, on a similar score, with Seamus Conroy third on 37 points. Daniel Brennan won the gross with 31 points.

Friday’s team-of-four competition was won by Eddie Russell (14), Pat Griffin (17), Denis Bartley (19) and John O’Connor (22) with 96 points.

The winner of Sunday’s singles was Gregory O’Connor (18) with 45 points from Paul Mclligott (12) with 39 and Brendan McKeogh   (17) also with 39. Eoghan O’Dea (7) won the gross with 31 points.

Ennis

The Friday ladies’ open singles at Ennis was won by Claire Carmody with 39 from Maureen Moloney with 37.

In the ladies’ seniors outing the winners were Mary Lenihan, Nuala D’Auria and Nuala Guinan with 46 from Eileen Daly, Eileen McMahon and Pat Leacy with 42, with third spot filed by Jean Dunne, Bernie Brooks and Phil Butler with 40.

The Cahercalla Cup was played for at the weekend when the winner was Andrew Whelan with 66 nett from Michael Murphy with 68 and Tony Kehoe, also with 68.

TJ Scanlan won the gross with 76 while the categories were won by Jason Woods with 71, Michael Hally with 69 and Niall Connellan with 68.

In the Friday open singles, Liam Burke was the winner, with 43 points from Eamonn Corry on 41, Robert Dormer, with 41 and Tony McInerney, with 39. Kieran Cunnane won the gross with 33.

The Ennis Seniors Group held a team-of-three competition last week. The winners, with 46 points, were  Joe McMahon, Ned Ryan and  Eamon Corry from Noel Pilkington, Pat O’Reilly and Willie Maloney, with third spot filled by Matt Fanning, Tom Pilkington and Michael Vaughan. In fourth spot were Mike Torpey, Sean O’Gorman and Denis Smith from Tony Coote, Luke Coote and Tom Purcell, with sixth spot filled  by Joe Dilleen, Tony Blake and Michael Butler.

Spanish Point

The winner of the men’s seniors open at Spanish Point on Tuesday was Len Wilson with a score of 34 points. Brendan Reddan had a hole in one at the eighth hole.

On Saturday and Sunday, the latest round of the Golfer of the Year was won by Anthony Garrihy with a fine score of 67 nett from Joe O’Rourke with a 68 nett and Eoghan O’Loughlin with a 70 nett.

This weekend, there is an 18-hole foursomes on and the usual time sheets are in operation by calling the clubhouse on 065 7084198.

Dromoland

Dromoland held a singles competition at the weekend and the winner of this first golfer-of-the-year competition for the season was Diarmuid McMahon, with 46 points from Noel O’Brien, with 44 and Nicky Duggan, with 43. The category 18 and over was won by Richard Flynn, with 39 points while the junior winner was Andrew Keane, with 33 points.

This weekend, the men’s monthly medal strokeplay will be the competition and it will be another golfer-of-the-year competition.

The first round of the club mixed foursomes is under way and this round is to be played by this Friday.

The Tuesday mixed scramble has commenced and is proving to be a huge success.

In the senior ladies, the winners last week were Madeleine Lyons, Annette Ryan and Carola Wixted.

The winners in the Eye Candy Spectacular Stableford competition on Sunday were Suzanne McConway and Lauren McConway with 44 points from Sandy Smith and Marian Keane with 43 points. In third spot were Katrina and Dervela O’Neill with 43 points followed by Kitty Quinn and Flor Coffey with 42 points.
Nearest-to-the-pin winner was Geraldine Ryan.

Lahinch

Lahinch defeated Castletroy 217 to 197 in the annual ladies’ match for the Quinlan Trophy last Friday.

The leading Lahinch scores were provided by Pat Ramsey (22) and Patricia O’Donnell (26), with 39 points from Val Shannon (8) and Marjorie Ahern (10), with 37. In third spot for the winners were Angela Cullinan (12) and Susan Coakley (13), with 36.

Castletroy’s leading scores came from Gwen Walsh (17) and Maeve Byrne (24) with 36, Trish Quigley (25) and Caroline Brennan (25) with 35 and Mary Byrne (12) and Ann O’Friel (23) with 33.

In the ladies’ monthly medal on the old course, Anna Glynn (19) was the winner with 74  from Sinéad Sexton (1) with 76.

Thursday’s men’s open singles was won by Dave Sheedy (7) with 33 points.

The ladies’ gold medal trophy on Saturday was won by Anne Vaughan (13) with 69 from Miriam Abernethy (9) with 72 and Angela Cullinan (12) with 76. Olivia Lucas won the gross with 82.

The men’s singles Stableford competition on Saturday was won by Ronan Murphy (6) with 37 points from Michael Waters (9) with 36 points and Walter O’Brien (12) with 36 points. Adrian McMahon won the gross with 29 points.

In the men’s fourball on Sunday, Shane Duggan (9) and Frank Keane (10) were winners with 39 points.

Kilrush

In the ladies’ seniors outing at Kilrush last week, the winners were Muriel Kiely, Aida Stanford and Marion Brenna from Una Doyle, Dolores Reidy and Bernadette Eastham with third spot filled by Colette Glynn, Carmel Lillis, Anne Hogan and Agnes Shannon.

The winners in the men’s seniors were Jimmy McSwiggan, Noel Cooney and John Robinson, with 55 points from TJ Lyons, Sean Moran and Murt Collins, with 54, with third spot filled by Seamus O’Doherty, Michael Leonard and Paddy Carmody.

In the ladies’ singles last Thursday, Lucy Blake was the winner with 35 points from Niamh Whelan with 33, Mary Nolan with 33 and Margaret Donnelly with 31 points.

The men’s singles on Sunday was won by James Murtagh with 40 points from Jim Young senior with 37 and Declan O’Donovan, also with 37.

Entries for the Glynn Cup men’s fourball matchplay are now being accepted.

The Leadmore Trophy, a men’s singles Stableford competition, will take place this Saturday and Sunday. The ladies’ inter-club competition will also take place on this Saturday and Sunday.

On Thursday next, the ladies will have the annual Australian Spoons competition.

East Clare

In the men’s 18-hole singles at East Clare on Sunday, the winner was Ben Kilkenny (1) with 43 points from Mike Whelan (5) with 40 points and James McNamara (9) with 38 points.

In the competition from the yellow markers, John Farrell (18) was the winner with 42 points.

The winners in the men’s seniors competition last week were Danny Minogue, Jack Hogan and Frank Cox from Liam Nolan, Kieran Sheedy, with third spot filled by Brendan Moloney, Jack Manly and Kevin Burke.

The winner of the ladies’ 18-hole singles was Tara Whelan (38), with 38 points from Deirdre Cooney, with 37 and Evelyn Skehan  with 35.

In the Friday scramble, the winners were Michael O’Donoghue, Helen Downey and Margaret Lynch from Jim Greene, Catherine Murphy and Teddy Murphy, with third spot filled by Brendan Moloney, Mary Stritch and Mary Joe Minogue.

This weekend, the men’s club have an 18-hole singles stroke competition while the open singles will continue on Thursday.

Kilkee

The teams captained by Mike Mullane and David O’Brien will contest the final of the spring league at Kilkee.
Mike Mullane beat Ger O’ Flynn one up, Kevin O’ Connor lost to Graham Reidy one up, Mike Miniter lost to  Patsy Bennett one up, Jim Leyden lost to Mike Smyth 3/1, Andrew O’Flynn beat Michael Morrissey two up and Joan Eakins beat Irene Neylon 4/2,

In the other semi-final, David O’Flynn beat Jimmy Murray two up, George Roche beat Pat Harte one up, Pat Powell lost to John Ryan one up, Michael Hoare lost to Len Owens two up and Deirdre Powell beat Myra Grady 3/2.

Portumna

In the men’s 18-hole Stableford at Portumna on Sunday, John Coughlan (18) was the winner, with 38 points from Kevin Kelly (10) with 37 points, Adrian Whyte (17), with 37 points and Sean Whelan (12), with 36 points. The gross was won by John Cleary (4), with 30 points.

In the ladies’ 18-hole Stableford  competition last week, Marie Kely was the winner with 40 points from Mary McDonagh with 36 points and Kathleen Lynch with 35 points.

Gort

The winner of the men’s singles competition at Gort at the weekend was Oliver Curtin (12), with 63 from Enda Cradock (1) with 66, John Cunningham (18), with 67 and Ray Beatty (13), with 67. Colman Cooney (4) won the gross with 74.

John Rodgers (7) won the open singles last Friday, with 36 points from John Greer (6) with 35 points.
In the Monday open singles the winner was Malcolm Reeves (19), with 37 points from Enda Cradock (1) with 36 points.

Maura Hanrahan (12) was the winner of the ladies’ competition with 38 points from Josie Cummins (19) with 36 points.

Clare Hurlers classic

The annual Clare hurlers’ golf classic takes place on Friday and Saturday week, May 3 and 4, at Shannon. More than 50 teams are expected to play in the competition. A limited number of tee times are still available and these can be booked by contacting committee chairman Mick O’Neill, PJ Kelly (Inagh) or any of the senior hurling management on players.

Carers classic

Caring For Carers Ireland’s second annual  golf classic was held in Doonbeg on Thursday.

More than 60 golfers participated in very sunny but windy conditions. The winners were Berrylane Consultants, Newmarket-on-Fergus, whose team comprised Michael Corcoran, John Collins, Tim Kennelly and Ger Hegarty with 74 points from Tom Phelan, Fr Ollie Maher, Pat and Agnes Shannon with 73 points and third spot filed by Maria Nolan, Deirdre Hughes, Mary Dowling and Adrienne Kitt with 72.

Ennis school classic

The second annual golf classic in aid of Ennis National School will take place at Ennis on this Saturday. A limited number of times are still available for this team-of-four competition and those wishing to book a time slot should contact Tom Glynn at 087 6306533.

Haven Arms ­Society

Shannon will be the venue this Saturday at 2pm for an outing for members of the Haven Arms, Kilrush Society.

Pitch and Putt

Tommy Kelly was the overall winner in the Bob Candy Trophy at the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club on Sunday.

Garath Kerin won the junior section, with Ger Hanrahan taking the intermediate honours, while Timmy Sullivan was the winner of the senior section.

The winners of Friday evening’s scramble at the Cill Na Mona club were Mary and Kitty Murphy and Nicky Moloney. The winners of last week’s two-ball scramble were PJ Considine and Ger Hanrahan.

The weekly competitions will continue on Fridays at 6.30pm.
