Community Games awards for Clare Champion

Declan Monaghan’s photo which won the most unusual photo category at the HSE National Community Games Media Awards. CLARE Community Games had a break from county competitions last weekend as all their interest was focused on the HSE National Community Games Media Awards, the winners of which were presented with their awards in the Radisson Blu hotel in Athlone on Saturday.
Three awards were presented to The Clare Champion for their continued coverage of Community Games affairs.
The paper was honoured with both a regional award and a continuity award, while photographer Declan Monaghan won the most unusual photograph category.
In addition, the Clare organisation’s public relations officer, Mary Phelan was presented, with an award.
John Treacy, chief executive officer of the Irish Sports Council, presented the national and regional media awards. Speaking to the guests including Paddy McCaul, president of the FAI; Dr Ailis Brosnan, HSE; Dympna Bracken, HSE and Mary Goode, AIT, John Treacy congratulated the media for their support of the Community Games organisation and also paid tribute to the Community Games volunteers for their dedication.
“The media have such an important role in building the profile of the Community Games and we are very eager to work with both the print and broadcast to develop our image further,” said Gerry Davenport, president of the HSE Community Games.

National finals

MEANWHILE, 147 competitors from over 20 areas around the county are busy preparing for the national finals weekend 1 (May 25 – 27 in Athlone IT. 
Clare will be competing in the following events: art U-8 to U-16; model-making U-10 to U-16; handwriting U -10; talent U -14, which includes dance, singing, recitation, music and drama, cross country mixed distance relays boys’ and girls’ U -12 and U -14 and the U -13 1,200m cross country.
County teams will compete in table tennis, projects, choir U-13, contemporary Irish dance, disco dance, set dancing, group singing, music, drama comedy sketch, chess U-16, girls’ and boys’ handball U-15.
The next competition is this Friday evening with the volleyball finals taking place in Coláiste Muire Ennis.

Saturday, June 2: pitch and putt at Clare Road, Ennis.
Wednesday, June 20: marathon at Kilmurry McMahon.
Sunday, June 24: county athletics at Lees Road.

THE Ennis St John’s swimming competitions took place at Ennis swimming pool on Thursday last. The event was held before a large attendance and was of a very high standard.

THE Derg area swimming finals took place on Monday at the Lakeside Hotel in Killaloe. There were over 50 participants under the age of 16 in attendance.
First and second in each race are going forward to the county finals on May 17.
