Colleran and Markham win in Quilty


Kilmurry-Ibrickane AC celebrated their 41st season when they hosted the Michael Egan memorial four-mile road race and fun run at Quilty on Sunday.

Competitors start off from Quilty. Photograph by John KellyLiam Markham, Ennis Track, won in 20.21 in a sprint finish with Kenneth Rodgers, St John’s and Michael Shannon, Kilnaboy. The team title and Michael Egan Shield went to Ennis Track ahead of Craughwell, Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare and Ennis Track B team.
Veronica Colleran, Ennis Track recorded a big win in the senior ladies with a very good time of 24.16. She had 23 seconds to spare over Tracy Roche, Dooneen with Imogen Cotter, Ennis Track third. Ennis Track A and B teams were first and second with the host club Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare in third place.
There was a big turnout for the event and a fast pace was set by Barry O’Donovan, UCC. Right on his shoulder for that first mile was Liam Markham, Ennis Track, Kenneth Rodgers and Jake O’Regan, both St John’s with a gap to Michael Maher, Micheal Keane both Ennis Track and Peter O’Sullivan, Craughwell.
At the two-mile mark in 9.57, Kenneth Rodgers and Liam Markham had a ten-second lead on Jake O’Regan with the rest of the field starting to struggle as they made their way towards the Crosses of Annagh. Both men went through the three-mile mark in 15.30 before, 200m from the finish, Liam Markham sprinted for the line to take his first title in this event in 20.21. He was followed by Kenneth Rodgers (20.23) with Michael Shannon third in 21.16. The early leader Barry O’Donovan finished fourth, Jake Regan came fifth and Michael Maher sixth.
Ennis Track won the team title and the Michael Egan Shield on a total of 28 points from Craughwell of Galway on 37 points. In third place were the host club Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare on 97 points followed by Ennis Track B team on 114 points.
The masters O-40 title went to Martin Corcoran, Craughwell for the second year in a row, with a time of 22.19 from Robert Purcell, Gneeveguilla and John Beakey, Kilnaboy. The O-45s went to Keith Ryan, Limerick in 23.05 followed by Mike Cunningham, Bilboa and Tommy Joe Whyte, Tuam.
The O-50’s race was dominated by Eugene Moynihan, Marian in a very good time of 23.47 with James Kenny, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare second followed by Gerard Griffin, Bilboa.
The O-55 title went to Mike McDomhnaill West Limerick in 23mins.55secs from Michael Harvey Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare and Brendan Cusack, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare. The O-60 title went to Tom Madden, Marian, in 25.40.
The junior men’s title was won by Jake O’Regan, St John’s, who finished fifth overall in 21.58. In second place was Peader Harvey, Craughwell, followed by Robert Purcell, Gneeveguilla.
In the ladies race Veronica Colleran, Ennis Track, and Tracy Roche, Dooneen, set a very fast pace; both went through the first mile in 5.55. The second group included leading junior athlete Imogen Cotter, Ennis Track along with Marie Carey, Aishling Power, Aoifa Nash and Ita Hanrahan, all Ennis Track, and Deirdre Finn, Bilboa.
At the two-mile mark, Colleran and Roche were shoulder-to-shoulder. Over the next mile they opened up a good lead on Imogen Cotter with Marie Carey moving into fourth position.
As they entered the final 800m, Colleran was strong at the front and crossed the finishing line in 24.16 to add to her wins in 2005, 2006 and 2007, with Roche second in 24.39.
Imogen Cotter came in in 26.02 with Marie Carey fourth, Marian Burke, St Mary’s, fifth, and Aishling Power, Ennis Track, sixth.
Ennis Track A Team won the team title on 14 points, with Ennis Track B second on 44 points and the host club Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare third on 64 points.
The masters ladies O-35 title went to Marian Burke, St Mary’s, for the second year in a row in 26.43 from Rosemary O’Brien, Ennis Track and Lorna O’Neill, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare.
The big winner in the O-40s was Aishling Power, Ennis Track, in 26.51 ahead of Deirdre Finn, Bilboa and Ita Hanrahan, Ennis Track, Sue Garrahy, Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare, captured the O-45s in 29.30 with Marian O’Loughlin second and Christina Organ, Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare third.
In the masters athlete O-50s Bernie Kelly, Galway City Harriers, won in 29.31 from Carmel McDomhnaill, West Limerick and Maura Falsey, Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare.
The junior ladies title went Laura Power, Ennis Track, in 30.43 with Ciara Nash from Clonlara and Emerald AC Limerick second.
