CLOONEY-Quin defeated Kilkishen by the narrowest of margins in a very entertaining Minor B Shield final at Shannon camogie field on Saturday. The teams were evenly matched throughout and it was a goal from Clooney-Quin’s Jessica Leamy after a great burst through the middle by Aisling Corbett five minutes before half-time, which was to prove the decisive score of the game.
Kilkishen were first out of the blocks when Kate O’Gorman hit over a free on four minutes after Deirdre Minogue was fouled. Deirdre Minogue then hit over a fine point from play before Clooney-Quin’s Jessica Leamy converted a free after Emily Maloney was fouled as she was racing through the Kilkishen defence. Kate O’Gorman then scored her first point from play for Kilkishen, which was closely followed by another minor from Deirdre Minogue to leave the score at 0-4 to 0-1 in favour of Kilkishen with 23 minutes gone. However, it was Clooney-Quin’s goal on 25 minutes, which was to prove vital and it left the teams level at half-time.
Clooney-Quin began the second half in determined fashion and Kilkishen backs coped admirably under a lot of pressure. It was 20 minutes into the second half before Jessica Leamy eventually broke down the Kilkishen defence and scored a fine point from play. This was followed by a further point from Clooney-Quin’s Emily Maloney, again after good work from Aisling Corbett, to leave two points between the teams with seven minutes remaining.
Kilkishen’s Kate O’Gorman scored a superb point from play to leave the minimum between the teams and despite valiant efforts to score an equaliser, it was not to be and Clooney-Quin ran out victors.
After the game, the shield was presented to Clooney-Quin captain Lorraine Ryan.
