Cliffs become National Geographic photo of the day

AN iconic image of the Cliffs of Moher appeared this week as one of National Geographic’s photos of the day.

The shot was taken by Kansas man Jim Richardson in 2006 for an assignment he was working on for the scientific and educational institution’s magazine.
The shot was taken for a story on the Celtic world called Celt Appeal but didn’t end up accompanying the article published in March 2006.
“The Cliffs of Moher are always striking. It is hard to take a bad picture of them. It was particularly striking that evening because all the crowds had gone except for this one couple enjoying it by themselves,” Jim told The Clare Champion.
“It really struck me as something that appeals to people about some of the places in Ireland where you are very close to nature and history and geology and you can have a very special moment by yourself. The couple were just sitting there looking over the edge and when people look over the edge there is this thrill and fear that is there. They were having a fun and laughing and it was delightful to share that with them for a few minutes and leave them alone,” he continued.
As I walked away I will always remember they were still laughing and their laughing finally mingled away with the sound of the waves,” he concluded.
The veteran photographer was in Ireland as recently as last month as part of a tour of Ireland and Britain but is slow to suggest when or where these photos might be published.
