Clarecastle bridge 36-year gap

THE Cumann na mBunscol GAA season drew to a close in the past week with finals in the camogie and hurling championships taking place.
The games produced some excellent entertainment and the outcome in most matches was in doubt right to the final whistle.

Clarecastle 2-5
Clonlara  1-4

Clarecastle bridged a 36-year gap to their last success in Division 1 hurling when they defeated Clonlara in the final at Sixmilebridge on Tuesday.

This was a very evenly contested tie for the most part and the teams were level at half time when the score was 1-0 to 0-3, the goal coming from Kevin Mulcaire.
The sides continued to be evenly matched until the last five minutes when Conor Ryan scored his team’s second goal that sent the magpies on the way to a title they last held in 1974.

Tulla and Knockanean produced some great hurling when they clashed in the Division 2 final.
The sides were level at half time with the score at 2-2 to 1-5 for Tulla. Brian Fahy, the Tulla captain, scored all of his side’s points from frees. Goalkeeper Killian Dunworth pulled off a crucial save in the first half and was very solid throughout. Shane Hunt scored two goals, one in each half.
Conor Dinan scored Tulla’s other goal in the second half. Knockanean put up a great battle throughout the game and had most of the possession in the second half. Their points were taken by Maruice Nugent (2) and Darragh Crimmins (3) with goals by Ruairí Crimmins, Dylan Mulligan and substitute Vincent Quinlan.

Scariff 3-3

An outstanding display from Corofin’s Louise Browne was the highlight of the Division 3 camogie final. She accounted for all of her side’s scores, contributing 1-3 in the opening half. In the case of all three goals, she won possession in her own defence and soloed the length of the pitch before shooting to the net.
She was backed up well by full-back Aleisha Malone, who made some crucial clearances during the game. On the Scariff side, Allison Madden and Lauren Solon did all the scoring. Solan scored three points in the first half with Madden adding two goals leaving the half time score Scariff 2-3 to Corofin’s 1-3. The Scariff goalie Amy Solon pulled off some fine saves during the game.

Outstanding performances from Tiernán and Cathaoir Agney inspired Kilmurry to victory in this Division 6 hurling final. They were 5-1 to 1-4 ahead at half time and went on to dominate the second half.
On their way to the final they had beaten Clonmoney, Ballycar, Doora and Kilnaboy while Doora accounted for Ballycar, Clonmoney, Bodyke-Tuamgraney and Whitegate.

Two first half goals from Jack McInerney inspired Creatloe to this Division 3 hurling final victory over Kilnamona on a day when they were 2-5 to 1-1 in front at half time. Evan Gaule was their other goalscorer while David Mescall, Michael McCreanon, Ian Kerin and Aoife Keane scored for Kilnamona.

Seán Phelan scored seven goals as Broadford captured the Division 4 hurling title with victory over Flagmoung-Drumindoora in a cracking decider.

Kilnamona were crowned Division 2 camogie champions when they accounted for Ballyea in a well-contested final. The winners held a one-point advantage at half time when the score was 0-7 to 2-0. In the second half, Kilnamona got the upperhand and powered on to take the title.

Feakle were crowned Division 1 camogie champions at Dr Daly Park in Tulla on Monday when they overcame the challenge of Clarecastle by the minimum margin. There was little between the sides in what was a low scoring game.
