Clare U-14s lose to Waterford

Waterford 3-7   Clare 2-5

The Clare U-14 ladies’ football team travelled to Fraher Field in Dungarvan last Saturday to play Waterford in round two of the Munster Championship. Clare were beaten 3-7 to 2-5, with Waterford the physically stronger team.

Waterford were first to score and pointed twice before Clare responded with a point from Ciara Hickey. Thirteen minutes in, Joanne Potter (Clarecastle) suffered an injury to her hand and was replaced by Róisín Martin (Banner Ladies).

The next two scores came from Emma Deegan, the first was heading for the back of the net but was tipped over the bar by the Waterford goalie for a point. The second score came about from a close hand-pass from Fidelma Marrinan and Emma Deegan booted it into the Waterford goals, to make it Waterford 0-3, Clare 1-2.
Unfortunately, this was the last score for Clare for this first half, with Waterford scoring a further 2-3 in the first half, to led by 2-6 to 1-2 going into half-time.

Clare came out fighting in the second half, taking the first two scores, a point from Ciara Hickey and a goal from Emma Deegan.

With the scoreboard now reading Waterford 2-6, Clare 2-3, this was the nearest Clare were to get to Waterford in the second half.

Ciara Hickey scored a further two points but Waterford kept ahead with a point and a goal scored in return. Several minutes of injury time was played due to knocks received to a few Clare players in the second half but the deficit was too large to overcome at that stage.

The next outing for the Clare girls is on Saturday against Limerick at a Clare venue yet to be confirmed.
