Clare successes at Munster schools championships

CLARE athletes won five gold, 11 silver and seven bronze medals at the Munster Schools Track and Field Championships, which were held in beautiful weather conditions at Cork IT recently. Many Clare schools were represented and there were some outstanding individual performances.

In the minor girls’ 800m race, Aisling Kelly, St Joseph’s Spanish Point, put in a very big performance to take a silver medal, while in the minor boys’ 800m Eoin Looney, St Joseph’s Spanish Point, led from start to finish to take gold and set a personal best time of 2.16:98.

 

In the junior girls’ 1,200m walk, Anagharad Loughnane, Gaelcholaisti Luimnigh, won a silver and she also captured a bronze medal in the shot putt, with Deirbhile Ryan, Gaelcholaisti Luimnigh, taking the gold medal with a throw of 11.24m. Deirbhile also took in the high jump with a leap of 1.59m.

Kevin Mulcaire, St Flannan’s, produced a big performance in the junior boys’ 1,500m but was beaten on the line for the gold medal with a time of 4.28:77.

Alice Akers, Scariff CC, won gold in the intermediate girls’ hammer with a throw of 46.91m and she also captured a bronze medal in the discus, throwing 31.33m.

In the intermediate boys’ 2,000m walk, Tulla’s Fergal Conlon won a silver medal, while in the long jump, Dan Finnerty, St Anne’s Killaloe, took a bronze medal and came away with a silver medal in the 100m hurdles.

Eoin Hanrahan, St Flannan’s, captured a double silver medal in the shot putt and discus. In the intermediate boys’ Seamus McMahon, St Caimin’s Shannon, captured a silver medal in the hammer and a bronze in the discus.

Amy O’Donoghue, Villiers, won gold in the senior girls’ 1,500m with a time of 4.50:37 and a silver medal in the 800m, with Claudia Loughnane, GaelCholaiste Luimnigh, taking a silver medal in the 3,000m walk. Niamh Markham, St Flannan’s, competed in the senior girls’ 400m and 800m and won bronze in each event.
In the senior boys’ 100m, St Flannan’s Cormac Lynch won a silver medal with a time of 11.27s and a bronze medal in the 200metres in 22.82s.
