THE Irish Water Safety National Lifesaving Championships, hosted by Clare Water Safety, were held at the White Strand, Miltown Malbay, last weekend. Over 140 competitors from Clare, Louth, Donegal, Wexford, Waterford, Wicklow, Galway and Mayo competed in extremely challenging conditions, with the tail end of Hurricane Katia raging.
The Clare senior team of Oisín McGrath, Colm Fitzgerald, Dylan Barrett and Darragh Glavin retained the President’s Cup, which was awarded to Irish Water Safety in 1950 by former President Sean T O’Ceallaigh. There were many individual achievements by Clare competitors and the county took gold in many of the team events.
The junior and masters competitions scheduled for the following day were cancelled due to adverse weather conditions and it is hoped it will now take place on Saturday, October 1.
