NEWLY appointed Clare senior football manager Mick O’Dwyer received a rousing reception when he attended the Clare ladies’ football medal presentation at the West County Hotel in Ennis last Friday night.
O’Dwyer’s predecessor, Micheál McDermott, was also among the guests, along with Brian Enright, president of the Munster association and Paul Flynn from Ennis Electrical, Clare’s main sponsor.
Clare chairman Alan Copley, who was also the U-14 manager, paid tribute to the underage players and their respective management teams. “It’s a collective effort from everyone,” said Copley.
Medals were presented to the U-14, U-16 and minor panels. The minors won the Munster and All-Ireland B titles and they received their medals from O’Dwyer, who praised all involved for their efforts. The minors beat Limerick in the provincial final and Roscommon in the All-Ireland final.
O’Dwyer told the big attendance that his job is to produce a good team and get the young people of Clare interested in Gaelic football. “We are working very hard and we will be well able to take on the bigger counties when I’m finished with them,” he said. He added he is hoping to continue the “wonderful work which Micheál McDermott did with the team”.
The master of ceremonies for the evening was Gabriel Keating.
