Participating in the Kennedy cup is a costly exercise given that the squad will be based at UL for most of a week.
To this end Clare officials set out to raise funds towards offsetting these costs and they came up with a novel idea.
The crossbar challenge saw members of the squad chase a world record for the most times they could hit the crossbar from the penalty spot.
“We researched this and found that the record stood at 50 for an hour. We managed 112 in an hour and subject to confirmation, our record will be registered into the Guinness Book of Records”, Kennedy cup manager Martin Hehir explained.
“Only 11 players were allowed to take the kicks. The other nine in the panel retrieved the footballs and placed them for the kicks. It was a most enjoyable exercise and through sponsorship it helped raise valuable funds for our campaign,” according to Hehir.
He confirmed that the record attempt by the Clare squad on Sunday morning last, was attended by the mayor of Ennis Michael Guilfoyle as well as Clare schoolboys league chairman Tommy Molloy. In addition adjudicators were present to verify the world record attempt.
