The ladies championships will dominate the boxing season this weekend when the National competitions take place in Dublin.

Clare will have a number of boxers in action and hopes are high that there will be a number of Irish champions returning to the county.

Sally Carrig, a winner in 2011 and a European bronze medalist last year, will be challenging for the 66kg title (junior 2).

A member of the elite ladies squad for the European and world championships, she travels to Dublin every week for training and victory in the Irish championships this weekend would strengthen her position in the elite squad.
Caoileann McCormack, Kilfenora, who also boxed in the Europeans last year and who has also won an Irish title will be competing in the 56kg division.

Kilfenora’s Shannon McCormack, who was beaten in last year’s final, will challenge for the 54kg title.

Another Kilfenora member, Niamh Ahern, winner of the Munster title for the past two years, is hoping to add an Irish title to her winnings this weekend. She will compete in the 66kg (junior 1).

Rebecca Wendal from Ennis recently won the Munster title and she will compete in the Irish championships for the first time, challenging for the novice title at 60kg.

Tara Dowling from Ennis will compete for the 60kg title.

Kilfenora’s Louise O’Regan, Munster champion in the 80kg division (junior 1), is a doubtful starter due to injury.

The action gets underway at 5pm on this Friday evening and continues throughout Saturday. The semi-finals and finals will take place next weekend.
