Trials were held recently for the Irish junior and senior surf lifesaving teams for the upcoming European competitions.
The Irish Squad, made up of top lifesavers from around the country featured a large contingent from Clare, with over half of the junior boys and junior girls panel coming from the Banner county.
Other counties represented were Mayo, Donegal, Wexford, Galway and Waterford. The squad have been training together for a number of months and the teams are picked from the squad based on a beach and pool trial competition at Spanish Point recently.
The action started at 9am, however due to very rough seas the group moved to White Strand to finish the beach events. Competitors had to complete in beach flags, sprint swim, run-swim-run and board races before the action moved to UL arena for the pool events. These events simulate rescue situations with full manikins being towed and pulled by the competitors over 50m.
