Clare athletes storm to Munster success

The field bunches up during the Boys Under 12 race at the Munster Novice and Under 21 Cross Country at Newmarket On Fergus on Sunday.THE Munster Even Ages U-10 to U-18 plus novice and U-23 Cross Country Championships were held on Sunday last in Newmarket-on-Fergus in wet and heavy underfoot conditions.
On a very testing day, many Clare athletes performed well with Daiela Svensson (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) starting the day on a high note when taking the girls’ U-10 1,000m and leading Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare in the Munster inter-club gold medals.
Alex O’Neill (St Cronan’s) was a very impressive winner of the girls’ U-12 2,000m and Clare won the gold medals.
In the boys’ U-12, there was a one-two for Clare with gold going to Aidan McCarthy (St Cronan’s) and silver to Caoilfhionn O’Dea (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare).
Silver medal winners were Ben Whelehan (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) in the boys’ U-10, Aishling Kelly (St John’s) in the girls’ U-14, Paul Martin (Ennis Track) in the boys’ U-14 and Stephan Rooney (Ennis Track) in the boys’ U-16 with bronze going to Eoin Looney (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) and Niamh Markham (Ennis Track) in the girls’ U-18.
The big team winners were Ennis Track with gold in the girls’ U-18, silver in the boys’ U-14 and bronze in the boys’ U-16 and U-18; St John’s captured silver medals in the girls’ U-14, and bronze medals in the U-16 girls and Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare taking gold in the girls’ U-10 and silver medals the boys’ U-12.
In the inter-county section, Clare won three gold medals, girls’ U-12 and U-18 and boys’ U-14, silver medals in the boys’ and girls’ U-10 and boys’ U-12, with bronze medals in the girls’ U-14s boys’ and girls’ U-16 and boys’ U-18.
In the novice and U-23 ladies, Cushla Bríd Hehir (Ennis Track) won a bronze medal in the novice ladies, leading Ennis Track to inter-club awards. Claire Madigan (St John’s) won a silver medal in the U-23 ladies and Clare won the silver medals in the novice ladies, with Michael Shannon taking a silver medal and Clare taking the gold medals in the novice men’s section.
