Clare athletes in winning form


The Athletics Association of Ireland juvenile B cross country U-11 to U-19s plus inter-county relays for U-12 and U-14, intermediate and masters men’s and ladies’ championships were held in Lough Key Forest Park, Boyle, Roscommon, at the weekend.

Clare athletes made light work of the heavy underfoot conditions, with Amy Sexton (Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare) winning the girls’ U-11 and leading her club to team gold, with Clare taking silver medals.
Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare won gold in the girls’ and boys’ U-11 as well as silver medals in the boys’ U-13 and boys’ U-15.
There were silver medals also for St Mary’s in the girls’ U-13, where Clare won the bronze medals.
Conor Madigan won gold in the boys’ U-17 with Karl ­Fitzmaurice (Shannon) taking the silver medal and Shannon and Clare taking the gold medals.
In the intermediate ladies’ 4,000m, Marie Carey (Ennis Track) won the silver medal, with the club winning the national intermediate ladies’ title.
In the intermediate men’s 10,000m Michael Shannon (Kilnaboy) won a silver medal with Kenneth Rodgers (St John’s) in fourth place. Clare captured the silver medals in the inter-county awards.
In the masters men’s, with 200 competitors on the starting line, Eugene Moynihan (Marian) was an O-55 silver medal winner and Clare won the bronze medals in the masters’ O-50, with Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare finishing seventh.
In the national inter-county relays 4 x 500m, the girls and boys U-14 Clare teams captured national honours.

AAI Four-­mile Road Championships

The Clare Athletics Association Four-mile Road Championship for men ladies will take place this Sunday, hosted by Ennis Track, starting at 1pm in Ballyea.
There will be two races on the programme, starting with the ladies’ four-mile at 1pm and followed by the men’s four-mile at 1.30pm, with changing facilities at Ballyea Community Centre.
The ladies’ race will be run over a distance of four miles this year and will feature Marie Carey (Ennis Track), the county cross country champion, who will start as favourite along with Cushla Bríd Hehir, Veronica Colleran, Siobhán Lennon, Becky Coughlan, Aishling Power (all Ennis Track), Sharon Rynne, Noreen Mackey, Michelle O’Mahoney, (all Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) and Marian Burke (St Mary’s).
The team contest should be a close affair between Ennis Track, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, St John’s and St Mary’s.
The men’s race will be run over a distance of four miles and Michael Shannon (Kilnaboy) will battle with Kenneth Rodgers, Jake O’Regan (both St John’s) for honours, with Dermot Galvin (St John’s), Micheal Keane, Brian McGinley, Brian Murphy (all Ennis Track), James Liddane (Tulla), in the masters’ O-40s, Pat Hogan (Ennis Track) Ambrose Heagney (Kilnaboy), James Kenny (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare), Eugene Moynihan (Marian), Tom Mackey, Michael Harvey, James Sexton (all Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare), battling it out in the masters’ sections.
The Clare senior cross-country champions (Ennis Track) will start as favourites from St John’s, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, Marian, St Mary’s and St Cronan’s.
