Civil Defence gets new wheels

Adrian Kelly, left, Clare chief fire officer, handing over the keys of a water tanker to Liam Griffin, Civil Defence officer, as Mayor of Clare Christy Curtin, right, hands over the keys of a fire tender to James Dormer, Civil Defence instructor, watched by Bill Smith, director general, Civil Defence; Ger Dollard, director of services, Clare County Council; Tom Burke, senior fire officer with Clare County Council and Clare Civil Defence members and instructors at rear.
Clare Civil Defence received a major boost to its vehicle fleet when Clare County Council purchased a Volvo fire tender as well as providing a water tanker recently.
A formal handover of both vehicles was made at a function at the Civil Defence headquarters, Quin Road, Ennis, last Friday.
Clare Civil Defence had been very active during the severe weather situations in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and the addition of the new fire tender and water taker will assist the organisation greatly if a similar situation arises again in the future. Both vehicles are capable of carrying large quantities of water for distribution in the event of freezing weather or at other times of water shortage.
Mayor of Clare, Councillor Christy Curtin, who earlier handed over the keys of the fire tender to James Dormer, Civil Defence fire instructor, addressed the function. He praised the organisation for its work throughout the county over many years and also spoke with fond memories of his own time as a volunteer member with Clare Civil Defence.
Director of Services, Ger Dollard, complimented all members for their service and commitment and added that the presentation of the two vehicles was just reward for the efforts of Clare Civil Defence in serving the people of the county in time of need.
Bill Smith, director general of the Civil Defence, also addressed the gathering and said the Clare Civil Defence had always been to the forefront and was never found wanting when required to support the frontline emergency services.
Mr Smith also stated that the Civil Defence Board would offer positive support to the local organisation in terms of providing new equipment and clothing.
Chief fire officer Adrian Kelly thanked Clare Civil Defence for its support to the fire service in the past and referred, in particular, to the severe weather crisis over the previous three years. He said that he had confidence in the organisation to help, when required, in a positive and professional manner.
Earlier, Mr Kelly presented the keys of the water tanker to Liam Griffin, Civil Defence officer, who described the handover of both vehicles as a vote of confidence in the organisation.
Clare Civil Defence will be recruiting new members in the autumn of 2011. Training will be provided in first aid, fire fighting, rope rescue and radio communications and all people over 16 are eligible to apply for membership. Contact can be made at lgriffin@clarecoco.ie or on 087 2615560.
