Checkpoints after alleged hit and run

Gardaí in Gort are planning to conduct checkpoints in Ardrahan village next Friday as part of their ongoing investigation into the death of a local farmer.

Gerard Keane, Cloughroak, Ardrahan, was out walking in Ardrahan village when he was allegedly hit by a car close to the traffic lights as he attempted to cross the road at around 7.30pm last Friday.

According to Gort gardaí, the vehicle failed to remain at the scene.

The 66-year-old single farmer was rushed to University Hospital Galway, where he died on Saturday.
Gort gardaí have pledged to carry out a checkpoint in Ardrahan village between 7pm and 8pm and interview passing motorists in an effort to jog the memory of regular commuters between Galway and Limerick at this particular time.

It is expected gardaí will also hand out leaflets as part of their appeal for witnesses in relation to the collision.
Gardaí interviewed the owners of a white van also seen in the area at the time and have ruled them out of the investigation. However, gardaí wish to speak to the occupants of a black coloured hatchback car that were seen in the area at the time to eliminate them from their enquiries.

Anyone who witnessed this collision or who can assist with the investigation is asked to contact Gort Garda Station on 091 636400, the Garda confidential telephone line on 1800 666111 or any garda station.
