Centenary club classic at Portumna

In the centenary club classic at Portumna at the weekend, the winners were Stephen Madden (14), Pat Healy (12), John Lyons (18) and Rory Kennedy (18) (Portumna), with 97 points from James Porter (12), Joe Slattery (14), Gerry Madden (13) and Ronan Madden (13) (Portumna), with 94.
In third spot with 93 points were Anne Fahy (16), Bríd Kelly (23), Pauline McEvoy (26), (Portumna) and Raymond Moloney (17) (Curra West) followed by Michael Kennedy (13), Basil Kennedy (8), Michael Flanagan (20) and Sean Whelan (12) (Portumna), also with 93. Fifth spot was filled by Gerard Brehony (14), Mike Coniry (28), Mike McGivern (13) and Dermot Egan (12) (Portumna) with 92 and they were followed by Ger Lynch (6), Mary McElroy (24), John Harte (7) and Mary Kelly (24), (Portumna) with a similar score and Mike Denver (16), Alan Gorman (15), Willie (7) and Graham Carty (12), also with 92. In eighth position, also with 92, were John Coughlan (17), Shane Duffy (15), Dave Burnett (17) and Frank Hynes (15) (Portumna).
The final of the open three-ball was played on Saturday, when the winners were Noel Casey (Ring of Kerry). Anthony Daly (Mountain View) and Trevor Melbourne (Mountain View), with 45 points from Colin Allen (Slievenamon), Stephen O’Donnell (Dundrum), Shane Kenny (Slievenamon) also with 45 points. Third place was filled by Pat Quinlan, Eoin Slattery and Padraic Cahalan (all Portumna), with 44 points.
There will be a ladies’ open singles next Tuesday, with a men’s open every Monday and a men’s seniors open every Wednesday.

Lahinch
The Lahinch ladies’ club teams were very successful at Kilrush last weekend, where the minor, challenge and intermediate cup teams won their first-round matches but the Junior Cup team was narrowly defeated on Sunday, losing their match on the 19th hole.
Last week’s ladies’ singles was won by Angela Cullinan (13) with 34 points from Rose Doyle (13) with 31 points and Pat Ramsey (22) with 31 points.
The ladies’ singles competition for the Neville Stewart Cup was played on Saturday, when the winner was Mary O’Meara (13) with 39 points from Olivia Lucas (7) with 33 and Val Shannon (8) with 32. Sinéad Sexton won the gross with 29 points.
In the silver section, the winner was Angela Cullinan (12) with 32 from Catherine McKenna (19) with 31.
The bronze section was won by Ann O’Sullivan (24) with 30 from Miriam Hillery (21) with 30.
Sunday’s men’s fourball Stableford competition on the Castle Course was won by Kieran Shanahan (21) and Richard Meaney (14) with 44 points. They had one to spare over Eoin (5) and Tom Glynn (11), with Stephen (scr) and Bob Loftus (2) a point further back on 42.
On Sunday, the ladies played for the Burns Lindown Cup, a singles Stableford competition, and the winner was Georgina Condon (17) with 42 points from Marese Mannion (20) with 39 and Bernadette Scanlan (26) with 38 points. The gross was won by Orla Barry with 29 points.
In the silver section, Muiriosa Connolly (10) won with 36 points from Jenny Cagney (15), with a similar score. The bronze section was won by Orlaith McCarthy (36) with 37 points from Katherine Feore (23), also with 37 points.
The lady captain’s (Aedin McCarthy) prize to the men on Sunday was won by Alan Murphy (10), with 41 points from Gerard Dunworth (6) with 38, John Murphy (13), with 38. Colm Kennedy (12) with 36, Pádraig Slattery (7) with 36 and Gerry Buckley (8) with 35 points. The gross was won by Bob Loftus with 32 points.
The Visitors’ Cup, a men’s singles Stableford competition, was won by Donal Vaughan (7) with 40 points from Peter Hennessy (4) with a similar score, Kieran Shanahan (21) with 39 points and Hilary Haydon (13) with 39 points. Mark Ryan won the gross with 35 points.
In a ladies’ scotch foursomes competition on the Castle Course on Bank Holiday Monday, the winners were Dervla O’Neill (22) and Sheena Mannion (25) with 44 points from Patricia O’Donnell (27) and Anne Kirby (27) with 42, with third spot filled by Mary O’Meara (11) and Frances Wood (15), also with 42.

Ennis
Ennis Seniors held a team-of-three competition last week, when 94 played.
The winners with 76 points were Bernard Hanrahan, Pascal Russell and John Joe Keane from Pat Cahill, Ned Ryan and Larry O’Farrelly, who had 75. In third spot with 74 were John Vaughan, Jimmy McEnery and Tony Coote followed by James Ball, Tom Pender, Eamon Murphy and Tony Blake on 74. Fifth spot was filled by Noel Connellan, Dick Burke and Pat Rutherford with 73 followed by Liam Roche, Tom McGrath and Pat Murphy. In seventh spot were Peter Daly, Andy Cregan and Sean Ryan followed by Fintan McEvoy, Brendan Colton and Bobby Burke
The annual Teresa Howard singles competition will be held on Thursday next, May 16 and a timesheet is in operation.
In the ladies’ fourball last week, the winners were Kitty Morris and Yvonne Keohane with 35 points from Valerie Hassett and Suzanne Deane, with a similar score. In third spot were Nuala Healy and Bridget Hoey with 34.
The winner of the ladies’ open singles on Friday was Mary Lenihan with 36 points from Patricia O’Donnell with 32 and Beatrice Foley with 31.
In the ladies’ seniors outing last week the winners were Alice Darcy, Susan O’Brien, Mary Colton and Pauline Parkes with 64 from Patricia O’Donnell, Angela Gough, Monica Gallagher and Betty O’Riordan with a similar score.
The Intermediate Scratch Cup was played on Sunday at Ennis, when the winner was Dermot Ryan with 84 gross from Tony Kehoe on a similar score, with club captain Des Neylon third on 85.
In the nett category, the winner was Niall Connellan with 67 nett.
In the Junior Scratch Cup, the winner was TJ Scanlan with 76 gross from Ian Myatt, with a similar score. Aidan O’Connor, Dromoland, was third with 77. In the nett section, the winner was John Considine with 71 nett.
In the Dr Rodgers Shield team event the winners were D Considine, Kieran Ryan, Senan Ryan and Cyril Corry with 94 points from Leo Herbert, Brian Kilker Adrian Glynn and Johnny Guerin, with a similar score, with third spot filled by Seamus Bowe, Peter Quinn, Paul McCabe and Don Ryan with 92.
The winners of the ladies’ section were Eithne and Joan Murphy, Attracta Williams and Joan Cullinan with 82 points.            
Aidan Lynch won the Friday open singles with 39 points from Noel Casey with a similar score, Derek Healy (Castleross) with 37 and Nicholas Ryan (Woodstock) with 36.

Kilrush
In the men’s seniors outing to Lahinch Castle Course last Wednesday, the winner was Tom O’Dea with 35 points from Maurice Roche with 34, Pakie O’Dea with 32 and Seamus O’Doherty, also with 32.
The ladies’ Australian Spoons competition was won by Muriel Kiely and Maeve Murphy with 42 points from Anne Hogan and Marian Brennan with 40 points.
The Shannon Ferries team-of-three competition on Saturday was won by Pat and James Murtagh and Declan Conway with 87 points.
Sunday’s men’s singles Stableford was won by Ned O’Connor (Dungarvan) with 39 points from John McGrath with 37 and Tom O’Dea, also with 37.
The weekly mixed will continue this Friday at 6.15pm and there will be a singles on Sunday with a ladies’ singles on Thursday next. Entries are being accepted for the Glynn Cup, a men’s fourball matchplay.

Shannon
The Shannon course development team-of-four competition was held on Sunday, when the winners were Maurice Lynch, Seamus Doyle, Billy Grimes and Declan Carmody with 97 points.
Last week’s men’s open singles winner was Michael Casey with 39 points from Pádraig Cahillane with a similar score and Barry O’Riordan with 38. Daniel Brennan won the gross with 33 points.
Shannon will host the North Munster section of the Jimmy Bruen Shield this Saturday and Sunday.

Dromoland

There was a singles Stableford competition at Dromoland at the weekend when the winner was Cathal Boyce with 43 points from Brian Cassidy with 42 and Niall Cannon with 39. Gay O’Gara won the category 18 and over section with 37 points while the junior winner was Dale Foley with 35 points.
A weekly open singles will commence this Friday.
This weekend’s competition will be an 18-hole singles Stableford competition and it will take place this Saturday and Sunday.

Spanish Point
The winner of the men’s seniors on Tuesday was John O’Brien, with a fine score of 40 points. The winner of the latest round of the golfer-of-the-year competition was Anthony Garrihy with a 62 nett. In second position was John Fitzgerald with 68 nett followed by Gary Carroll, who also had a 68 nett. This weekend, there is an 18-hole singles Stableford competition and the usual timesheets are available by phoning the clubhouse on 065 7084198.
The draw for the Dan Gallery matchplay has been made and has brought up some very exciting battles. Scrambles are starting back on May 17, with a draw for partners taking place at 6.30pm. This competition is available to members and non-members and is a great social occasion. All are welcome.
The Gathering event on the June Bank Holiday is going full steam ahead, with over 100 competitors already confirmed. Anybody likely to take part has to confirm on or before May 26 in order to facilitate the organisers.

East Clare
In the men’s fourball qualifier at East Clare the winners were Martin McInerney and Brendan McInerney, with 44 points.
The winners in the men’s section in the open team-of-three were Kieran Quinn, Martin O’Neill and Sean McMahon, while the ladies’ winners were Catherine Minogue, Bess Fennessy and Mary Rogers.
In the Friday scramble, the winners were Dave Condren, John Fahy and Nancy Starr from Kevin Burke, Kathleen O’Brien, Tomás Costelloe and Pat Williams.
In the men’s seniors section the winners were Danny Minogue, John Anglim and Liam Skelly from Bill Cullen, John Fleming and Jackie McHugh, with third spot filled by Jim Fahy, Kieran Gibbons and Mick Ryan.
The draw has now been made for the men’s fourball matchplay.

Gort
The bank holiday open singles at Gort was won by Sean Hanbury (15), with 41 points from Shane Keane (15) with 38 and Declan O’Halloran (14) with 38. Colman Cooney (4) won the gross with 32 points.
In the weekend’s singles competition the winner was four handicapper Colman Cooney with 38 points from David Quirke (4) with a similar score, John Sinnott (21) also with 38, Kevin McGourty (17) with 37 points. Ronan Higgins (7) won the gross with 30 points.
The winners of the club Am-Am at the weekend were Donal Murphy, Jerry Kearney, Billy Farrell and Seamus Hanley with 103 points from John and David Daly, Gerry O’Donnell and Pat McCarthy with 98. In third spot were Colie Allen, Stuart Perry, Pat Kirwick and Shane Kenny with 95 followed by Dermot Collins, Johnny Greally, Tom Curley and Michael Bond with 95. In fifth spot were Michael O’Dell, John Williams, Patrick Ryan and Pat Curtis with 95 followed by John Kelleher, Ray Quinn, Kevin Mulkerrins and Ronnie Killeen with 93, Pat Fitzpatrick, Robin Lahiffe, Seamus Brophy and Michael O’Grady with 93, Joe Geoghegan, Andreas Edler, Siobhán Forde and Róisín Walsh with 93, Sean Cahill, Alan Fogarty, Robert McDonagh and Enda Cradock with 92 and Matt O’Halloran, Michael Ryan, Kieran Reidy and Gerry Connors with 92.
In the ladies’ long drive, Helen O’Flaherty was the winner while Enda Cradock won the men’s long drive.
The open singles continues this Friday with the club cup stroke medal qualifier, a golfer-of-the-year competition on Saturday and Sunday.
The winner of the ladies’ 18-hole singles on Bank Holiday Monday was Ann Kerins (21) with 36 points from Patricia Skehill (26) with 34 points.
Sunday’s singles stroke competition was won by Róisín Walsh (32) with 68 from Ann Jordan (32) with 73 and Marian Ruane (27) with 73. Maura Hanrahan (12) with the gross with 86.
The Ladies’ Club Cup competition will be held this Sunday and it is an 18-hole stroke medal event. There will be an open 18-hole singles on Monday.

Clare hurlers
Sixty-five teams played in the annual Clare Hurlers’ Classic at Shannon on Friday and Saturday, when the winners, with 105 points, were Gerry and Kevin Corry, Mike and Tom Ryan. At the presentation of prizes, they received the Ger Hoey Memorial Trophy.
In second place with 103 points were Donal Cooney, Frank O’Meara, Liam Nolan and Mike O’Halloran, followed by Conor Moroney, Mike O’Brien, Ciarán Treacy and PJ Moroney with 102. In fourth spot with 98 were Tony Lacey, Peter Kennedy, Seamus Hickey and Donal Keogh followed on 95 by Davy Fitzgerald, Kevin Corry, Kieran Murphy and Carina Rosengrove, with a similar score. In sixth spot, also with 95, were Mick and Paul Jones, Eamon Cregan and Tom Page. In seventh spot were John, David, Bernie and Bridget Hoey with 94 points.
The winners of the long drive on day one were Sean Neylon and Hilery Clein while the day two winners were Peter Kennedy and Connie Corry.                 
The nearest-the-pin winners were Mick Foley (Friday) and Paul Coleman (Saturday).

Clare Teachers
Thirty-three teachers played in the Clare Teachers competition for the Hillery Cup in Shannon last week.
The winner, with 40 points, was Sean Cleary and he had four to spare over Sean Daly with 36, Richard O’Connell with 36, Michael Drew with 34 and Tom Glynn with 34. Eoin Glynn won the gross with 78 while the category winners were John Reynolds with 33, Seamus Frehill with 34 and Kathleen Frehill with 32. The winners of the nines were Anna McGillicuddy with 17 and Tim Kelly with 20 points.
The society’s next outing will be to East Clare on Saturday, May 18, when the tee will be available at 1am.

McCaffrey Cup
The 11th annual McCaffrey Cup was held at a blustery East Clare on Saturday last. An early score of 42 points was set by John Punch (14) and was bettered by only one person late on when Gary Guilfoyle returned 43 points playing off 16. Punch was second followed by Stephen Moloney with 39 points and Brian McMahon, with 39. Nuala, Sean and Joanne McCaffrey presented the cup to Gary.
In the team event, the winners on 65 points comprised three former champions. The team members were Stephen Moloney, Denis Collins, Muirne Donnellan and they won from Gary Guilfoyle, Colin Nelson and Ray Bane with 60 points.
Bernie Bohan won the ladies’ singles with 35, Brendan Moloney won the seniors with 35 while the junior winners were Regan Conway (girls) and Fiachra Donnellan. Nearest-the-pin prizes were won by Sean Jones and John Moloney on a day when 52 golfers took part.

Sixmilebridge
Sixmilebridge Society will hold an outing to East Clare this Saturday, when the tee will be available from 9.30am.
The society is celebrating its 25th anniversary and officials are anxious to learn who the members were who played in the first-ever outing back on April 17 1988. Anyone with information can contact 086 3651838

Pitch and putt
Kevin Woods was the winner of the strokeplay competition at Clare Road on Sunday. In second place was Gerry Kierce followed by Noel Cuddihy.
The winners of Monday’s three-ball scramble were Noel Cuddihy, Gerry Kierce and PJ Considine.
