The seaside breeze hisses beneath the rafters at the home of Carrigaholt’s oldest resident. As she speaks, Margaret Boland’s eyes glisten with thousands of memories. This is the 103rd birthday she has celebrated and some might forgive her for growing tired of the ritual.   “I’m 103,” Margaret proudly exclaims, with a wink. “You wouldn’t think it, would you?” She has lived through a century, experiencing events that have been confined to history books for most. Yet she has hardly set foot outside of West Clare. Born and reared in the rural seaside village of Carrigaholt, she bid farewell to her siblings at a young age as they set sail for New York. “She stayed behind,” her daughter Margaret Jr explains. “I think she just liked to be home to look after her mother. Kilrush FF Cumann lays down a challenge to TDs

EMMET Greaney, secretary of the Kilrush Fianna Fáil Cumann has challenged Clare’s three Government TDs to “stop this Government from further attacking the weak and vulnerable”. In a statement issued this week, he claimed the disadvantaged area and the disabled persons’ schemes now face losing funding from local authorities across the country. “From the viewpoint of my sister, I have seen first hand how such funding to the disabled helps both families and the community as a whole and how it creates a better standard of life for those with disabilities,” Mr Greaney said. “Galway County Council last week admitted that because of the shortfall in the household charge payments across the county, payments to these schemes would be cut or postponed. This sets a precedent for the rest of the country. Cork has now begun deferring such payments, leaving the possibility of the same happening here in Clare,” Mr Greaney claimed. “These grants and schemes are used to improve …

KILRUSH town councillor Ian Lynch has revealed that, on a recent visit to the US, he found that representatives of the IDA and Enterprise Ireland were unaware of plans to utilise Shannon Airport as a cargo hub.Councillor Lynch was speaking at last month’s meeting of Kilrush Town Council, following a motion from Councillor Tom Prendeville asking that the members call a special meeting with interested organisations to examine ways and means of assisting local businesses to withstand the recession.
