‘Fulsome’ apology after ‘tone deaf’ Clare parade float

ORGANISERS of a North Clare parade, in which one entry depicted a dead man being taken to a post office, have apologised and described the situation as “tone deaf”. Kilfenora St Patrick’s Day parade was one of a number nationwide to contain floats representing a widely-publicised incident in which Carlow man Peadar Doyle was found to be dead during an alleged attempt to collect his pension. Foul play was ruled out in the 66-year-old’s death last January and Gardaí are continuing their investigations. After a major backlash following the parades, Orla Vaughan, apologised publicly and sent a letter to Mr Doyle’s family. “To Noeleen, Peadar’s sister and to Liam and Christopher, Peadar’s brothers, I really, really apologise,” Ms Vaughan said on Clare FM. “I can understand retrospectively, and that’s never a good thing, the hurt it caused them.” The Kilfenora woman said the committee sent a card last Monday to Mr Doyle’s family and that they would welcome an opportunity …

Football signed by Brazilian great to be raffled for charity

A SHANNON business is raffling an official Euro 2020 Match Ball, signed by Ronaldinho to raise funds for the Ennis GOAL Mile for Ukraine. Explaining how her company got the ball, Karen Finley of FHB Building Supplies said, “My son Peter has been living in Dubai for the last six years, he’s a social media influencer. “He’s sponsored by a lot of big names, Samsung, Adidas, all of them. He comes across some interesting people. “We had a jersey last year from Mo Salah, they’re the kind of people he crosses paths with. He interviewed Ronaldinho and during it he signed a ball for Peter.” The Special goal mile for the victims of the war in Ukraine will take place in the Fairgreen Ennis on March 27 between 11 and 1.

Tulla fundraiser for Ukraine

UKRAINE will be to the forefront of a musical fundraiser in Tulla on Saturday (March 26), when a wealth of East Clare talent with gather in solidarity.  Moved by the plight of those who have been forced to flee their homes, a group of local musicians and singers will perform in the the square in Tulla, throughout the day, to raise funds for the refugees from the Ukraine.  Among those performing will be Aisling and Leah Hunt, Andrew Mac Namara and Michael Landers, John Canny and Mark Donnellan, Mary Mac Namara and Risteard Crimmins, Cushla,  Àine and Cara Murphy. They will be joined by a group of local singers under the baton of Joan Culloo Mac Namara. The fundraiser will run from 10am to 5 pm. All money raised will be sent to the Irish Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal.

‘Big Maggie’ sets scene ahead of feast of drama in east Clare

LIVE drama makes a welcome return to East Clare later this month and, as part of that, John B Keane’s legendary leading lady Big Maggie will be making an appearance. Tulla Drama Group is staging the classic tale of sex, land and money at Tulla Courthouse this week from Wednesday, March 23 until Friday March 25 and Big Maggie will also feature in the feast of drama that will be on offer as part of the 73rd Clare Drama Festival. After a hiatus due to the pandemic, the event is back from Friday, March 25 to Saturday, April 2 in Scariff.  The festival opens on Friday, March 25 at Scariff Community College Hall. Big Maggie will be back on stage there on Wednesday, March 30.  Other highlights of this year’s festival will include a performance of Sive by the Clan Machua Drama Group on March 25. Meanwhile, on Saturday, March 26, Skibbereen Theatre Society will perform Brighton by Jim Nolan. …

Hopes of reviving heart of west Clare town

DERELICTION in the centre of Kilrush is to be tackled, following representations by Councillor Ian Lynch.  The Independent Council member raised the issue at the West Clare Municipal District meeting earlier this month when he highlighted the state of Moore Street in the heart of the town. He asked that the area be considered for inclusion on a suitable scheme to address dereliction and also that overhead electricity lines be put underground, if possible.  In a written response, Mairead Corbett, Administrative Officer in the Housing section stated: “The Vacant Homes Office is currently undertaking a study of Moore Street, Kilrush with a view to identifying vacant properties with potential for redevelopment.  Assessment is ongoing on a number of properties to determine their potential and decide on future action”. Clare village’s sewerage scheme takes step forward

IRISH Water, working in partnership with Clare County Council, is progressing plans to deliver the Clarecastle Sewerage Scheme that will end the discharge of raw sewage into the River Fergus and Shannon Estuary. Project Delivery Lead for Irish Water, Seamus Glynn said, “Wastewater from the public sewer network in Clarecastle is currently discharged untreated into the River Fergus and the Shannon Estuary. “The discharge of untreated wastewater is unacceptable, threatens water quality and detracts from the amenity value of the area.” “Once completed, the Clarecastle Sewerage Scheme will improve the water quality in the River Fergus in compliance with national and EU regulations relating to the treatment of wastewater, and will enhance the environmental amenity of the Clarecastle area. ‘Steady stream’ of funds flow in for Ennis group’s Ukrainian support

AN appeal launched locally to support a former Ennis resident helping Ukrainian people fleeing their country has raised more than €3,000 in less than a week. The Ennis-based Ireland Poland Ukraine Refugee Relief (IPURR) was recently set up to help Ukrainians driven from their country by the war and has been collecting donations to support their Polish friends Marcin Piotrowski and Marina Sestasvili-Piotrowska. (See Champion story here) The family lived and worked in Ennis for over a decade before returning to Poland in 2017, and since the Russian invasion they have been providing important help close to the Ukrainian – Polish border. Pat Rutherford of the IPURR committee told us that there has been a “steady stream” of support for the gofundme page  https://gofund.me/d11b390e that has been set up to collect donations.
