Seed Savers’ sales grow by 20%

Sales of vegetable seeds at a registered charity organisation in Scariff have grown by an impressive 20% in the last year, thanks to the recession.Chrys Gardener of Irish Seed Savers’ Association said the amount of vegetable seeds sold at their centre have jumped by 20% from January to July this year, compared to the same period last year. The group estimate that 10,000 packets of seeds are sold on an annual basis. Ms Gardener has noticed that there is now a lot more interest shown by people in starting their own vegetable patch in their back garden.The increased interest in gardening was reflected by the attendance at the first tour of six private gardens in East Clare last Saturday. The garden tour attracted 211 visits in total, ranging between 30 and 43 for each garden and some green-fingered enthusiasts also attended more than one garden.According to Ms Gardener, the feedback from the event was extremely positive, with participants commenting on …

Countdown begins to Scariff Show

The annual Scariff Show takes place on Saturday, September 3, at the Scariff Show Grounds. There is something for everyone at the event, with a range of horse classes, from Best Irish Draught-type Mare to the Yearling Filly All-Ireland Championship, pony classes, showjumping, a sheep section and a dog section. The Scariff Show doesn’t just cater for farmers and horse breeders, as there will be a range of contests across a range of disciplines including the best in home baking, arts and crafts, roots and vegetables, flowers and amateur photography. Children will be well entertained, with special competitions, amusements, vintage machinery and much more.The show’s charity partner on the day is the Irish Wheelchair Association and the focus will be on their big fundraising event this year. Whitegate crossing must be made safer

A child could be injured crossing the road in Whitegate because of the lack of a proper pedestrian crossing, it has been claimed.Councillor Pat Burke asked Clare County Council to provide a solution to make the pedestrian crossing at the entrance to the GAA field at Whitegate much safer.Following recent resurfacing of the regional road, Councillor Burke told a recent Killaloe Electoral Area meeting that some vehicles are now being driven at excessive speeds, while local children thought they had a right to cross at this location.He warned that tourists and visitors are not aware of this crossing. “I am looking for a better solution at this location,” he said.Mayor of Clare, Councillor Pat Hayes, he said this problem was on the agenda for the last 10 or 12 years and noted this was the only facility where local children could cross.Councillor Hayes agreed a better solution needed to be implemented by the council.Electoral Area chairman, Councillor Joe Cooney, who …
