Clare still await first points after Wexford raid Cusack Park

CLARE are still searching for their first points of the new National Hurling League campaign, writes Eoin Brennan, after going down 2-20 to 1-20 against Wexford in Cusack Park on Sunday afternoon. For the second consecutive season, Wexford left Ennis with a valuable victory under their belts to leave the hosts pointless after two matches. Leading by 1-16 to 1-14 following a strong third quarter turnaround, Clare lost their way down the final straight as a resurgent Wexford fired 1-5 without reply including a 64th minute goal for Diarmuid O’Keefe. Emanating from a defensive error, it would be the clinching score in front of an attendance of 2,855. Mark Rodgers again led the way on the scoreboard, mainly through placed balls and was aided by strong displays from midfielder Paddy Donnellan, Shane Meehan and impressive newcomer Patrick Crotty from the bench. Three Rodgers frees lifted the hosts to a 0-4 to 0-2 advantage by the tenth minute but despite a …

Clare fail to capitalise on fast start against lively Laois

Laois 2-12 Clare 2-7 Ivan Smyth Eight minutes in to this Lidl Ladies National Football League opening round encounter it would have taken a brave punter to predict this final score line. Clare led by 2-2 to no score with Fidelma Marrinan running riot in the opening exchanges. However, Laois slowly worked their way in to the contest as they began to turn the screw on a Clare side who were unable to handle their opponents front foot pressure. Last year’s Division Three champions outscored their opponents by 2-12 to 0-5 for the remainder of the contest as their pressure from the front stopped the quality supply of ball to the Clare forward unit. Laois fired over 2-8 without reply either side of half time. Fidelma Marrinan, who finished with 2-6 to her name, was starved of possession for much of the final three quarters of this game. Clare may point to three spurned goal chances in the second half …

THE government has been urged to reverse the planned end of coal-powered electricity generation in Moneypoint Power Generating Station by 2025 in the absence of alternative energy sources being available to fill the gap, writes Dan Danaher. The call was made by Independent Deputy Michael McNamara, who has criticised the Government’s policy of closing power stations during an energy crisis in the hope that they will eventually be replaced with green energy sources at an unspecified time in the future. In the absence of assurances that Ireland will have alternative energy sources in place by 2025, Deputy McNamara believes the government should reverse its decision concerning the proposed end for coal-powered electricity at West Clare power generating station. Speaking in the Dáil on Thursday night during a debate on a Bill introducing the €100 electricity credit scheme for householders, Deputy McNamara said growing concerns over Ireland’s energy security are being exacerbated by the closure of the country’s power stations and …
