Clare woman had €500,000 winning ticket for a month

A Co Clare woman was sitting on a winning €500,000 EuroMillions plus ticket for a month before she realised there was a chance she could be a winner. It was only through a casual conversation at home that she learned the winning ticket was purchased at Barry’s Mace Store in Ardnacrusha, where she played EuroMillions on October 6 last. The winner, who arrived at National Lottery at the weekend, with her large family to collect her cheque, revealed she is not a regular player of Lottery games. “I was in the car on October 6 when I heard that night’s EuroMillions jackpot was €190m so I pulled into the nearest shop to buy a ticket,” she said. “I heard the following day that the jackpot was won in Spain, so I didn’t even bother checking the results. Killaloe crash victim dies from injuries

The occupant of a vehicle which was involoved in a crash near Killaloe last week has died in hospital from his injuries. The fatal traffic accident occurred between 4.05am and 4.12am on Tuesday morning, November 7 last in the townland of Cloonfadda which is not too far from Clarisford on the Killaloe to Limerick Road. The car contained five occupants which were all injured in the crash and removed to University Hospital Limerick. Unfortunately one of the occupant’s injuries were so severe that he later died. Gardai in Killaloe are investigating the circumstances surrounding this accident and are appealing for information from any person who may have witnessed the accident or who has any information concerning this car and its occupants either before or after the accident.

Supermarket plan on hold after appeal

PLANS for the development of a supermarket and medical services centre on the outskirts of Ennis town centre have been put on hold, with an appeal lodged to An Bord Pleanála. Clare Car & Tractor Parts Ltd and Lohan Property Ltd were granted planning permission by Clare County Council for the development of the existing retail warehouse site on the Kilrush Road. The application sought the amalgamation and change of use of the four permitted ground-floor retail warehouse units to provide for: a supermarket, including a licensed alcohol sales area; eight neighbourhood centre retail units, with new independent shopfront entrances and neighbourhood centre management areas. The plans also include a medical services facility, including consultant rooms and associated waiting and administration area and more than 200 parking spaces. A total of 14 third-party submissions were received in relation to the development. Ennis man on a winning streak

THE stars have aligned for well-known Ennis man John Cullinane, who is set to make an appearance on television’s Winning Streak tonight (Saturday). The retired public servant found it hard to believe his neighbours when they told him his name was pulled out of the drum to appear on the show. He had to watch the rerun the following day just to rest his mind. John was at an anniversary mass for his parents, which was in a rural church, so he missed Winning Streak. When he and Anne went into the local hotel bar later that evening, the neighbour called over to him and said, “John, I hear you’re in the money now!” Seventy-three-year-old John worked for the Mid-West Health Board before his retirement and describes himself as a “very proactive person”. EU grant for Clare maritime opportunities

Clare County Council has been granted funding close on €400,000 from the EU to lure young people into considering maritime-related careers. The local authority’s Social Development Directorate, through its remit to increase overall participation levels in sport and physical activity, has been awarded the EU Erasmus+ programme funding as part of the Atlantic Youth Project. “As the only Irish partner in the European-wide project, Clare County Council is tasked with encouraging and developing the maritime culture of young Europeans, through the practice of water sports and maritime education at school,” explained Tim Forde, head of sport and recreation with Clare County Council. “Over the three-year term of this project, the local authority will facilitate the involvement of a significant number of second level school children with opportunities to participate in water sports in our county, whilst also participating in organised maritime education opportunities that will be EU-funded.” Mr Forde and Liam Conneally, director of social development, Clare County Council, represented …

Lending support to the Medicinal Cannabis Bill

A MEMBER of the Kilkee Cannabis Club has written to the county’s four TDs, asking them to support the Medicinal Cannabis Bill, which is to be debated in Dáil Éireann today (Thursday). The Dáil will study the report on Scrutiny of the Cannabis for Medicinal Use Regulation Bill 2016. John O’Regan is backing Ireland’s Cannabis Party in its fast protest outside Leinster House from today up to November 16, in support of the Medicinal Cannabis Bill. Organisers say the fast is being held to highlight the need for medicinal cannabis to be legalised and regulated. Mr O’Regan, who lives on the Kilrush Road in Kilkee, said, “It is our intention to highlight the desperate plight that parents with sick children face. TDs and senators dine in the dark

Oireachtas members last night enjoyed dinner blindfolded to raise awareness about the challenges faced by people with sight loss. Dine in the Dark is an initiative which has been promoted by the National Council for the Blind in Ireland (NCBI) and the Restaurant Association of Ireland (RAI) to increase awareness of the challenges faced on a daily basis by people who are blind and visually impaired. The dinner was hosted by Senator Martin Conway, who is himself visually impaired. The fully booked meal included Ministers, TDs and Senators from across all political parties and is the first time in the history of the Houses of the Oireachtas that such an event was held.
