Carrigaholt-Cross on top for U-14 quiz

THE Golden Vale Milk Clare Community Games had three competitions over the weekend with the U-14 quiz, the handwriting and the mini-rugby competitions staged.

St Flannan’s College was the venue on Friday night for the U-14 quiz.
Carrigaholt-Cross came out as winners again this year and will go on to represent Clare in the national finals in Athlone at the end of May.
The members of the winning team were Fergal Carrig, Glenn Mullaney, Sean Deloughery, Muireann Keane, Patricia Foran and Fionn Liddane.
In second place was Kildysart with David Clancy, Brian Meaney, Louise Kelly and Aidan O’Loughlin. Third was Newmarket-on-Fergus with Lara Casey, Fionnan Crimmins, Cormac Kelly, Áine Feehily, David O’Dea and Mary Enright. Fourth was Cooraclare-Cree with Diarmúid Donnellan, Alannah Mullins, Caoimhe Browne, Deirdre Ryan and Aine McInerney.
The event was coordinated by Tony Bourke and the quizmaster was Martin McInerney.

Handwriting
On Saturday morning the new handwriting competition for both boys and girls U-10 was held in Tulla Secondary School.
There was great interest in the competition and the standard was extremely high. The winners will go forward to the national finals weekend at the end of May.
In the girls’ competition Niamh Enright from Newmarket was the winner over Aoife Daffy (Crusheen-Ballinruan) with Orla O’Connell (Cratloe) in third. Áine Murphy (Tulla) was in fourth place.
In the boys competition the winner is also from Newmarket. Harvey Culligan won from Shane Regan (Tulla), with third spot filled by Sean Ronan (Inch-Connolly-Kilmaley) followed by Ferdia O’Lionain (Sixmilebridge-Kilmurry).

National finals
The first of three national finals weekends will take place in Athlone from May 27-29. Competitors will stay in Athlone on Friday and Saturday nights and return home on Sunday evening.
The choir competition for U-16 will take place on Friday night from 7pm while, from 3pm on Friday, participants in the projects competition will be allowed to set up their entries with judging from 9.30am on both Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday, the boys’ art competition will be at 9am with the model making for boys at 2.30pm. The girls’ art competition will be at 9am on Sunday with the girls’ model making at 2.30pm.
Chess, draughts, table quiz, badminton, mixed distance relays, handball, cross country, indoor soccer, culture corner, set dancing, recitation, solo and group music, solo and group singing, table tennis and projects are just some of the competitions that will take place over the weekend.

Upcoming events
On Saturday, April 16, the tennis finals will take place in Ennis. On the weekend of April 30 and May 1 the Futsal finals will be staged at St Flannan’s College.
Flannan’s will also be the venue for the tag rugby finals on Saturday, May 7, with the hurling finals taking place at the Ennis college on Sunday, May 15.
On Friday, May 13, the girls Gaelic football finals will take place in Lissycasey with the U-10 football competition on Saturday, May 14.
The variety finals will be in Sixmilebridge on Friday, May 20, with the swimming finals at the Ennis pool on the same date.
The county athletic finals are scheduled for Sunday, June 26.
