Carrig loses out on a split decision

ENNIS light-welterweight Sally Carrig, seeking a second European boxing medal at the EU championships in a sweltering Kezethey, Hungary, lost out on a split decision to the Italian Monica Floridia in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.

The talented Ennis girl, who had just completed her Leaving Certificate exams before she flew to Budapest with the rest of the Irish team, gave a determined and gutsy performance against the Italian and lost out by a whisker in the end.

Sally’s team-mate and fellow medallist from the Europeans in Poland last year, Amy Broadhurst from Dundalk came through her quarter-final with Uringa Gus from Turkey to get amongst the medals.

Team captain Katie Taylor went into action last night (Wednesday) in search of her fifth European senior title.
