The highlight of the tournament was the performance of Ennis man and graduate of the club’s junior section, Robbie Carkill, who captured a clean sweep in the three A grade titles.
The club’s historians estimate that it is 20 years since Carkill’s feat was last achieved. It was the first time that he won the Singles A title and in doing so he displayed a rich range of shots and assertive tactics. On the way, he overcame the holder and three-time champion, Joachim Pintao. The gents’ singles A tournament is the club’s blue riband event and Sunday’s final was the 67th occasion that the PJ Cahill Cup was presented.
In the gents’ doubles, Robbie was partnered by fellow Ennis man, Dave Clohessy. In the mixed competition he teamed up with Angela O’Sullivan. It was also her first time to win at A level.
In the ladies A section, Fiona Healy won the singles for the first time after a close final with Alice Twomey. In the ladies A doubles, Liz Tuohy and Margaret Flanagan saw off Linda Kochhar and Maria Dolan.
In the B1 singles the winners were Noel Herlihy and Cathy Foley with Mary Browne and Tony Cox winning in the B2 section and all are now promoted for next year’s competition.
In the ladies B doubles, the formidable partnership of Una O’Reilly and Siobhán O’Donovan were successful and showed the benefits of representing the club together in various competitions during the summer.
A popular winner in the B mixed doubles was the partnership of Kevin Starling and Teresa Curtin. Kevin has come close on and a number of occasions but Sunday was his first win. In the gents B doubles, club stalwarts Paul Reynolds and Joe Walsh just did enough to defeat the relative newcomers of Chris Rudland and Wayne Burke
Great credit is due to tennis captain Kieran Tuohy and his committee; Colette Fannin, Martin Dunne, Kevin Starling, Martin Guinane and Martin Dunne.
