Captains and presidents reunion


During the year, Spanish Point lady captain Breda Murphy and captain Mike Hennessy, on behalf of the parent club, hosted a first former captains and presidents’ re-union, which included a round of golf and an enjoyable get-together reception afterwards.
Amongst the former officers who attended were three who were in office in the 1960s, Dr Michael O’Connor (captain 1963), James Meade (captain 1964) and Dot Bolster (lady captain 1968).
Sunday’s scotch foursomes winners were Bernie O’Halloran (19) and Gerry Gallagher (22) with 44 points.
In this week’s seniors open, Gerry Meade (17) was the winner with 37 points from Doonbeg’s Paddy O’Grady (15).
The weekly turkey competitions continue while the annual general meeting of the club’s management committee will take place this Saturday.

Ennis

Ennis seniors held a team-of-four competition last Thursday and the winners with 71 points were Peter Farrelly, Michael Torpey, Sean O’Gorman and John White from John Guerin, Michael Kerin, Tim Ryan and Johnny Cullinan with 68. In third spot were TJ Kerins, Johnny Stack, Tom Greene and Aidan Guilfoyle with 66 followed by Paddy Lane, F O’Donoghue, Conor Murphy and Jimmy Kerins with 64, with fifth spot filled by Ned Ryan, Michael Cummins, Pat Maguire and John Keane with 63.
Incoming captain Willie Moloney nominated Sean Fitzpatrick as his vice-captain for the coming year. Sean has been a hard-working member of the senior’s committee for a number of years.

Woodstock

The weekend turkey competition at Woodstock was a fourball betterball and the winners were Kilmaley’s Pat Keane (12) and Gerry O’Malley (18) with 49 points. They had one to spare over Tony Neville (12) and Brendan Keogh (19).
This weekend’s competition will be the same format, a fourball betterball.

East Clare

In the men’s singles competition at East Clare at the weekend, Darren Rosney (12) was the winner with 42 points from Martin Mason (19) with the same score.
Last week’s men’s seniors competition was won by JJ Barton, John S Kelly and Kevin Mannion from Martin Quinn, Chris Davis and Jack Manly with third spot filled by Ted Harrington, John Doyle and Liam Skelly.
In the ladies’ team of four, the winners were Bess Fennessy, Mary Collins, Mary Farrell and Mary Mannion from Catherine Minogue, Ina Reddan, Georgina Wright and Oonagh McElhinney.
In the ladies’ seniors, the winners were Trish Kerr, Lillian Nihill and Georgina Wright from Nancy Starr, Mary Collins and Mary Joe Minogue.
The golfer of the year for East Clare ladies’ club is Mairéad Toomey. The ladies’ club revamped the format for the competition this year to take in more competitions and Mairéad prevailed by a solitary point in a ding-dong battle from Breda O’Loughlin. Mairéad has been a member of the ladies’ club in East Clare since 2004. A noted sportswoman, she has played camogie for Clare at inter-county level and played for many years with her club, Sixmilebridge. She was a member of the ladies’ inter-club junior foursomes team that was narrowly beaten in the Munster final in Clonmel by Tralee. Not only did she represent her club in the inter-club matchplay, she also won the ladies’ single matchplay during the year and managed to reduce her playing handicap from 18 at the start of the year to 15.
The men’s club golfer of the year is John Duffy. John represented the club in the Pierce Purcell Shield over the last number of years. He went on to win this year’s president’s prize and also won the club singles matchplay. In addition, he partnered Kieran Kennedy to win the foursomes matchplay.
John has seen his handicap reduced from 16 at the beginning of the year to 13.

Portumna

Portumna hosted another men’s 15-hole competition at the weekend when Albert Kelly (10) won the 0-10 handicap section with 34 points. In the category 11 to 14, the winner was Kevin Donnellan (14) with 36 points while Brian Grogan (17) won the 15-18 category with 39 points. Hugh Devereaux (19) won the 19 and over category with 34 points while the seniors’ section was won by Brendan Madden (17) with 35 points.
The club will host a Texas hold’em poker game this Sunday at 5pm in the clubhouse. 
The parent club AGM will be held in the clubhouse on Tuesday at 8pm.

Lahinch

Jimmy Doyle (13) was the winner of the men’s singles Stableford competition at Lahinch on Saturday with 34 points.
In the men’s turkey fourball competition on Sunday, the winners were Jerry Foley (7) and Michael Cagney (12) with 40 points from Werner Kunz (14) and Don Dillon (16) with 39 points.

Shannon

In the weekend men’s singles at Shannon, the winner was John McCormack (18) with 41 points from Pat Madden (14) with 40 points. They were followed by John Gubbins (14) with 39 points, Patrick Griffin (17) with 38 points and Roger McMahon (15) with 38 points.  Paul O’Neill (1) won the gross with 32 points.
In the Wednesday singles, also played over 15 holes, Dermot Murphy (17) was the winner with 39 points from Eamon Fanneran (8) with 37 points. Pádraig Cahilane (3) won the gross with 32 points.

Gort

The winner of the men’s singles at Gort at the weekend was Michael Whelan with 42 points from Oliver Curtin with 41 points and James Mulqueen with 40 points, while John Greer won the gross with 30 points.
Last week’s open singles was won by Brendan Harte with 39 points. There will be a men’s 18-hole singles Stableford competition this weekend.
The annual general meeting of the parent club will be held on Monday night at 8pm with mass for deceased members at 7.30pm.
In the ladies’ competition last week, Sue Madden was the winner with 26 points from Ann Jordan, who had a similar score.
There will be another ladies’ competition this weekend.

Doonbeg

Last week’s ladies’ competition at Doonbeg was won by Ita Mangan from Helen Williams, with Elizabeth Williams in third spot.
The winner of the weekly nine-hole competition was Cora Igoe.
There will be an 18-hole singles competition on December 17 followed by a Christmas party at the Lodge.

Clarecastle

John Casey was the winner of the recent Christmas hamper outing at Spanish Point. John Meere was second, Liam Barry third and John Callinan came in fourth.

Dromoland

The winner of the turkey singles Stableford competition at Dromoland at the weekend was Ger Copley with 44 points from Nicky Duggan with 40 points. Aaron Duggan was the winner of the junior section with 33 points.
This weekend’s competition is a turkey singles with re-entry.

Pitch and Putt

The Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club outing took place last Sunday at Mellows in Galway when the overall winner was Gabriel Kerin followed by Gareth Kerin. Marty Fawl won the gross.
The winners of the scramble were Denis McElligott, Gareth Kerin and Paddy Sheedy.
The club’s annual general meting will take place this Sunday at 10am.
