At a well-attended meeting last week, Clare Camogie Board unveiled their plans for a showcase weekend in the county on the October Bank Holiday weekend.
The Clare shinty team will be managed by Catherine O’Loughlin, with selectors Noel McInerney (Newmarket-on-Fergus) and Niall Malone (Éire Óg) and will be a representative Clare team with the players coming from the clubs fielding at adult level. Saturday, October 27 will see a huge focus on camogie, with the ladies’ game being played in the Fr McNamara Camogie Field at 11am.
President Michael D Higgins will be in attendance, as well as camogie president Aileen Lawlor and the Munster Council. All clubs are invited to be in attendance and the field will be adorned with banners from all clubs in the county.
Following the ladies’ match, there will be a camogie parade through the town of Ennis, commencing at the Holy Family School, passing up O’Connell Street, where a reviewing stand will be in place at O’Connell Square. The parade will finish at Cusack Park. Over 1,000 camogie players will participate in the parade, with all clubs represented by underage teams. The Clare senior camogie team, winners of the Munster senior title earlier this year after a 66-year gap, and Clare development squads will also be in the parade, as will the Féile na nGael Division 2 champions, Inagh-Kilnamona.
Following the men’s international game at 2pm, the Clare Camogie/Shinty Club Tournament will commence. Eight Clare clubs – Newmarket-on-Fergus, Kilmaley, Sixmilebridge, Kilkishen, Éire Óg, St Joseph’s, Ballyea and Clooney-Quin – will host visiting teams from around the country.
