Cameras suggested for town square and car park

If Kilrush town councillor Paul Moroney’s plans come to fruition, the town square and Place de Plouzane will have close-circuit television cameras (CCTV) in place by next summer.

Councillor Moroney raised the issue at last month’s meeting of Kilrush Town Council and suggested that cameras be installed in the square and he car park before they are also utilised in other areas of Kilrush.
He has met Kilrush Superintendent Gerry Wall and Clare Crime Prevention Officer Joe Downey, both of whom have supported the initiative.
“I’m preparing a draft plan for the town council meeting before the budget meeting so we may be able to incorporate it before next summer.
“I’ve had three independent people come and look at different ways of doing it,” Councillor Moroney told The Clare Champion.
“I would think that people would find it safer to know that there are cameras in the square and in the car park. People park their cars there all day and go to work,” he added.
At last month’s meeting Councillor Moroney said that the board of Kilrush Credit Union support the idea, although Councillor Tom Prendeville pointed to “substantial set-up and monitoring costs”.
Councillor Mairéad O’Brien spoke in favour of the motion but warned that finance “is very, very thin on the ground”, while Councillor Ian Lynch proposed putting the plan on the agenda for a forthcoming Kilrush Joint Policing Committee meeting.
“Cameras are seen as safety aids now and you see them in any town or any city that you go to,” Councillor Moroney pointed out.
