GLÓR has lined up a range of top-class acts to suit all tastes and interests over the next few months.
To kick off the autumn theatre programme, the venue will once again play host to Ireland’s biggest theatre company. Druid Theatre Company will perform Seán O’Casey’s The Silver Tassie with a cast of 19, including budding Clare actors, Adam Bluett, Aoife Corry, Laura Keown, Oisín Ó Cualáin and Dalian Rynne in Garry Hynes’ epic staging. Gort’s Wild Swans Theatre will stage A Wake in the West at the venue, while Glór will also be bringing a version of Fawlty Towers to the Old Ground Hotel, with a unique dining experience, featuring Basil, Sybil and Manuel, from September 23.
Calipo Theatre Company from Drogheda makes its first visit to Glór with its sell-out 10 Dates with Mad Mary. Dublin’s Gúna Nua Theatre Company in October are bringing their award-winning and much acclaimed Little Gem, which sees three generations of Dublin women on a wild and constantly surprising journey, while Five Lamps Theatre Company presents a story of Ireland’s iconic agony aunt, Frankie Byrne, in Dear Frankie. For over 20 years, Ireland tunes in, as Frankie solves the problems of a nation at lunchtime on RTÉ Radio Éireann.
For music lovers, there’s also plenty to chose from in Glór during the autumn. On the classical side, the acclaimed Irish Chamber Orchestra will perform at the venue and their programme for the evening will include Vivaldi’s iconic Four Seasons.
On the folk/blues scene, Jerry Fish and The Mudbug Club and Bell X1 will perform in Glór, direct from a main stage gig at Oxegen 2010. Local audiences will also get to see the remarkable instrumental talent and sweet voice of Cathy Davey.
For musical theatre fans, Rebecca Storm will perform excerpts from her many leading lady roles in the return of Mad About the Musicals. Limerick Musical Society will provide more treats for musical lovers with their production Hollywood Hits, while the Ennis Gospel Choir, will perform Gospel at the Movies.
Glór’s signature First Friday series of gigs continues with Blazing Bows, featuring three fine fiddlers, Cathal Hayden, Dezi Donnelly and Tóla Custy and Fox and The Kane Sisters, with their harmonious sound.
For fans of country music, Sandy Kelly will sing the great songs of Patsy Cline and the remarkable Preston Reed, who is not only a virtuoso guitarist but has also created a legacy of unique recordings.
Clare’s favourite adopted son, Christy Moore, will perform with his collaborator of many years, Declan Sinnott in their first Ennis gig since 2005.
Comedy buffs will also be spoiled for choice, with the return of PJ Gallagher in September, Jason Byrne in November and the threesome of Irish comedy that is Young, Gifted and Green in October.
The September exhibition programme swings into action with Ennis’ own Mick O’Dea bringing his acclaimed exhibition Black and Tan to the Glór gallery. November will see a multi-media, group exhibition inspired by food – Food Art, Glorious Food Art.
Children are also well catered for with Baboró Children’s Festival staging of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The Black Light Puppet production will bring the hungry caterpillar to life to entrance children. The Ark and Theatre Lovette will present the story of The Girl Who Forgot to Sing Badly.
The usual wealth of Clare talent comes out to play for the autumn with the return of Banner Jigs ’n’ Reels. Many well-known Clare personalities will dust off their dancing shoes and strut their stuff for their chosen charity and the winner will be decided by the audience on the night.
