BURREN Gaels captured the Division 2 ladies league title when they accounted for Fergus Rovers at Quilty last week.
Burren Gaels opened the scoring with two points from wing-forward Leanne Flaherty. Rovers responded with a point from Fionnuala Nagle but had to wait 20 minutes to score again, after both sides were guilty of several wides. Burren Gaels led, 0-6 to 0-3, at the interval.
The North Clare side started the second half where they left off, with points from their inspirational midfielder Róisín Howley and the ever dependable forward, Bronagh Considine.
However, Fergus Rovers were not about to give up the challenge and they fought back with a great goal from Louise Griffin.
Clare senior player Kayleigh McCormack linked well with her fellow Kilfenora native Róisín Howley, who put the North Clare side in the driving seat. Captain Amy Moloney did very well and always looked a threat at full-forward.
Amy O’Brien, her fellow Clare minor Joanne Howley and the younger of the McCormack sisters Shannon, did everything possible to guard their goal throughout the exciting game. They held firm when Fergus Rovers were constantly pressurising.
However, Burren Gaels finished strongly and pushed further into the lead with four unanswered points from Katie Connole and substitute Megan Haugh.
